The story so far: Wu Ming and Oksana's Rift incursion ended in disaster with the loss of four team members, doomed to become Drifters beyond recovery. Hunted through hostile anomaly territory and pursued by increasingly organized mutant forces, the survivors narrowly escaped and linked up with the Directorate logistics detachment led by Misha Korovin. Breaking free from an unprecedented strategic encirclement, they fought their way back toward Greyfield, the Directorate's primary base of operations. There, the survivors confronted not relief, but the harsh reality of the Directorate itself, facing loss, accountability and the growing realization that both the anomalies and the creatures emerging from the Rift were evolving far beyond existing scientific understanding. As new deployments pushed deeper into unstable anomaly zones, the Directorate uncovered impossible Flux compounds with extraordinary medical potential while mounting evidence suggested that anomaly-induced mutations could no longer be explained by conventional science. When a specially active anomaly core was recovered inside an active Rift, Pavel Orlov led the extraction mission. The operation collapsed into catastrophe as hostile entities converged on the carrier, forcing Pavel to remain behind so his team could escape. Officially listed as missing in action, Pavel's fate became an even greater mystery when telemetry revealed the anomaly core's Anomaly Containment Cannister (ACC) was still moving under its own apparent direction. Rather than returning to Greyfield, the signal travelled relentlessly toward Nexus Two —the Directorate's heavily automated containment fortress built above the buried Original Rift , humanity's first and largest known Rift, whose immense core extends deep beneath the facility and is held in equilibrium by the Stabilization Lattice , a vast autonomous network powered by ordinary anomaly cores. Expecting another siege, Wu Ming's convoy fought its way to Nexus Two and held the gates against a massive Feral assault until the Carrier finally arrived. To everyone's astonishment, the transformed Pavel did not attack. He calmly placed the ACC before the fortress and simply waited. Moments later, Nexus Two initiated Containment Protocol Alpha entirely on its own. Blast doors sealed, automated systems reconfigured and the entire facility responded exactly as if it had detected a catastrophic containment breach — despite every sensor confirming that no breach had occurred. As engineers discovered the Original Rift's Flux signature changing for the first time in over thirty years, Dr. Elias Varenko realized the impossible: the ACC had not triggered a malfunction, but a unique interaction with the Original Rift itself. With the fortress responding to an event no one understood, Wu Ming's team prepared to conduct the first controlled experiment — moving the ACC away from Nexus Two — to determine whether the mysterious resonance could be stopped, or whether something irreversible had already begun.
