STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 31 ~
By EternaSky
📖 Chapter 31 — The First Resonance 🎬 Chapter 31.0 — Thirty Seconds The battlefield remained frozen. Rain washed slowly across shattered concrete. Smoke drifted through broken trees left scarred by the siege. Outside the gates of Nexus Two, the Carrier stood motionless. The rugged Anomaly Containment Canister rested upright where he had carefully placed it. Behind him... Thousands of Ferals stood silently beneath the rain. Not one advanced. Not one retreated. Inside Nexus Two, nobody spoke. The silence felt wrong. Wu Ming remained at the reinforced observation windows overlooking the entrance. The automated watchtowers continued tracking every movement. The DTV turrets remained trained beyond the perimeter. No firing solutions changed. No new targets appeared. Static crackled softly over the command frequency. Greyfield Command Nexus Two. Maintain observation. Wu Ming acknowledged without taking his eyes off the battlefield. Observation maintained. He lowered the radio. Nobody had another order. Everyone simply waited. For something. Anything. 🎬 Chapter 31.1 — The First Relay Thirty-eight seconds passed. Nothing happened. Then— CLUNK. A heavy metallic relay echoed somewhere deep beneath the facility. Several operators instinctively looked up. Industrial facilities made noise. Nobody reacted. Another. CLUNK. Then another. CLUNK. Nadiya frowned. One of the facility status displays changed. A single indicator shifted quietly from green... ...to amber. She immediately checked her console. No operator input. No scheduled operation. No remote command from Greyfield. Before she finished reading the log... A second indicator changed. Then a third. Across the Operations Centre... Status panels quietly began updating themselves. Nobody had touched anything. Nobody had issued a command. Nadiya Greyfield... Nexus Two is changing configuration. Greyfield answered almost immediately. Confirmed. No explanation followed. No instruction. Only confirmation. The silence inside Operations grew heavier. Everyone was now watching the facility... Instead of the Carrier. 🎬 Chapter 31.2 — The Fortress Responds The response spread quietly through the facility. Steel blast doors began closing. Not suddenly. Not violently. Smoothly. Methodically. Exactly as they had been designed to operate. Some corridors sealed. Others remained open. Entire sections of Nexus Two began isolating themselves. Conveyor systems transporting ordinary anomaly cores slowed to a stop before locking into standby. Heavy mechanical locks echoed through the structure one after another. The sound carried through the concrete like distant thunder. Operations immediately became alive with reports. Not panic. Procedure. Every department simply reported what they were seeing. Security South maintenance corridor sealed. Engineering Conveyor Network Three has entered automatic standby. Medical East treatment wing access restricted. Communications Internal camera routing has changed automatically. Logistics Freight Lift Two unavailable. Wu Ming listened without interrupting. Every report described a different symptom. None explained the cause. He looked around Operations. Nobody was issuing commands anymore. They were merely observing. For the first time since arriving... Nexus Two was operating entirely on its own. 🎬 Chapter 31.3 — Protocol Alpha The radio remained silent. Long enough that everyone expected Greyfield to issue orders. Instead... Dr. Elias Varenko spoke. His voice remained calm. Measured. Clinical. As though he were conducting an experiment. Not managing a crisis. Dr. Elias Varenko Engineering. Identify the initiating protocol. Several seconds passed. Keyboard strokes echoed faintly across the channel. Printed diagnostic sheets emerged from a nearby line printer. An engineer quickly scanned the report. Finally — Engineering Protocol Alpha. ... ... Dr. Elias Varenko Confirm the activation condition. More pages turned. The engineer compared two separate procedures before answering. Protocol Alpha activates during confirmed containment breach events. Wu Ming immediately turned toward the perimeter display. The external cameras remained unchanged. The gates were sealed. The walls were intact. The Carrier still hadn't moved. The Ferals remained perfectly still. Nothing had breached Nexus Two. Wu Ming keyed the radio. Negative. External perimeter remains secure. No hostile penetration. Elias acknowledged neither the report nor the conclusion. Instead... He asked another question. A better question. Did the containment breach sensors activate? The room became completely still. Several engineers immediately began checking historical logs. One technician compared live diagnostics against archived records. Another verified the sensor network independently. Nobody wanted to answer too quickly. Nearly half a minute passed. Finally— Engineering Negative. No breach sensor activation recorded. Silence. Nobody understood. Elias was troubled. Protocol Alpha could not execute without a containment breach. Yet... It had. And he had not figured out why. 🎬 Chapter 31.4 — The Wrong Alarm Yura had stopped watching the command displays. He was standing alone beside an older engineering console. Unlike the digital systems surrounding him... This one still relied on analogue instrumentation. Large circular Flux gauges. Mechanical recording needles. Continuous paper telemetry. He watched one needle drift almost imperceptibly. Barely noticeable. He frowned. Checked another instrument. The same movement. Then another. Again. He slowly overlaid three separate telemetry sheets. The lines matched. His expression changed. Not fear. Recognition. Wu Ming walked over. What is it? Yura didn't answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the charts. Finally— Yura It's not the ACC. Several nearby engineers looked over. Yura pointed toward the instrumentation. The ACC stopped changing the moment it was placed. He turned toward the immense reinforced containment building at the centre of Nexus Two. The one built above the buried Original Rift. Another telemetry line shifted. Only slightly. But enough. Yura The Original Rift didn't. He placed another sheet beside the first. The difference was almost invisible. Containment variance. 0.003%. To anyone else... Meaningless. To Yura... Impossible. He quietly whispered to himself. Thirty years... He looked toward Wu Ming and spoke. That's the first recorded change. The room suddenly felt colder. No alarms had sounded. No explosions had occurred. Nothing had escaped. Yet somewhere beneath Nexus Two... Something that had remained unchanged for three decades... Had just moved. 🎬 Chapter 31.5 — The First Experiment Nobody reached for a weapon. Nobody proposed another assault. For the first time since arriving at Nexus Two... The problem was no longer military. It was scientific. The Operations Centre remained silent. Every eye turned toward Yura. He continued studying the telemetry. The graphs continued changing. Slowly. Steadily. Almost imperceptibly. But they were changing. Wu Ming finally broke the silence. Can it be stopped? Yura didn't answer immediately. He looked back toward the surveillance screens. The Carrier remained exactly where he had been. The ACC remained upright before him. Nothing outside had changed. Only Nexus Two. Only then did Yura speak. We don't know. He reached across the console and laid several telemetry sheets beside one another. Every line told the same story. The change had begun the moment the ACC had been placed before Nexus Two. Not when it had arrived. Not during the battle. The exact moment... It had been presented. Yura looked toward Elias' live channel. We only have one experiment. A long silence followed. Dr. Elias Varenko answered. Not with certainty. With method. Increase the distance. The room waited. Elias continued. Do not recover the ACC. Another pause. Move it outside the containment field. Wu Ming nodded slowly. That distinction mattered. They were not bringing it inside. They were removing it from the field surrounding Nexus Two. Not to secure it. Not to study it. Only to determine whether distance altered the phenomenon. The simplest experiment. Yura nodded. It was the correct approach. Nadiya immediately began redirecting every external camera toward the western approach outside the gate. Security officers quietly checked magazines, radios and body armour. No one expected a firefight. But no one expected cooperation either. Oksana opened a medical field pack. She checked its contents one final time before closing it again. Wu Ming noticed. Expecting casualties? Oksana looked through the observation glass toward the lone figure standing in the rain. For a long moment... She said nothing. Finally— I'm hoping I'm wrong. No one asked what she meant. They already knew. She still wasn't ready to stop seeing Pavel. Outside... The Carrier remained perfectly still. The Ferals remained perfectly still. The rain continued falling. And somewhere beneath Nexus Two... The Original Rift continued changing. 📋 ENGINEERING INCIDENT LOG CLASSIFICATION: DIRECTORATE INTERNAL USE FACILITY: NEXUS TWO SYSTEM: ENGINEERING EVENT RECORD TIME: 03:43:08 Containment Protocol Alpha initiated.
