📖 CHAPTER 1 — “THE EDGE OF ENTRY” 🎬 Scene 1.1 — Arrival & Setup They arrive without announcement. The forest is already dead. No birds. No insects. Only silence that feels… enforced. A portable device is placed at the center of a clearing— its design compact, rugged, almost crude. It does not power itself. It feeds . Ambient radiation seeps into it. The device absorbs, converts, stabilizes. A faint hum begins. Oksana kneels first. Her white uniform stands out immediately against the grey world. Too clean. She checks her gear: syringes medical kit seals on her uniform gas mask (ready, not worn yet) Her wrist device: DIST 000 T+ 00:00 FL 12.4 Her FL is already different from others. She notices. She always does. Wu Ming does not kneel. He observes. His version of readiness is quieter. His wrist shows a similar readout— but the FL value is not the same. That matters. The team settles into position. No speeches. No unnecessary movement. 🎬 Scene 1.2 — Calibration & Load The device stabilizes. Then responds. The yellow liquid inside its gauge shifts upward. Slowly. Like something is being drawn from the world itself. “Load increasing,” Oksana says. Not alarmed. Just observing. Their watches begin to respond. DIST 003 T+ 00:01 The system is measuring something. Not distance in space alone. But distance into the rift field . Wu Ming adjusts a connector on the device. “Stable enough,” he confirms. No one argues. The forest remains silent. But something in the air has changed. 🎬 Scene 1.3 — Rift Emergence The purple glow appears between the trees. Faint. Soft. Not aggressive. Almost… calm. The glow does not expand violently. It exists into visibility . Like something being revealed rather than created. DIST 009 FL values begin to subtly fluctuate Oksana watches her wrist. The liquid gauge in her device shifts. Not dramatically. But noticeably. This is the first time the forest has reacted. Not to them. But to the rift. 🎬 Scene 1.4 — Final Check The team forms a loose operational structure. No ranks. Only roles. Oksana checks her syringes. The yellow fluid inside one vial moves slightly. Responsive. Alive, in a controlled way. She exhales. Through the mask. Wu Ming steps slightly forward. Not into the rift. But close enough to confirm intent. “Two minutes,” he says. No one questions it. They check: seals masks gear watches FL values remain stable… for now The rift glows softly behind them. Waiting. 🎬 Scene 1.5 — Entry Wu Ming steps first. Not dramatically. Just… forward. The moment his foot crosses the threshold: DIST jumps T+ begins accelerating FL shifts slightly Oksana follows. The purple light surrounds them. Not blinding. Not violent. Just… enveloping. The forest behind them fades. Not disappearing. But becoming distant. They are inside now. Oksana Andriivna Zahorna: Fang Wu Ming 方无名 (Field Operative): Fang Wu Ming 方无名 (Field Medic Operative): Rift Field Interface Unit (RFIU) #01 A compact, rugged industrial device known as a Rift Field Interface Unit (RFIU), designed for field deployment in radiation-damaged and anomaly-affected environments. The device has a heavy-duty metallic casing made of worn steel or aluminum, with visible scratches, dents, and signs of long-term use. It features reinforced edges, exposed screws, and utilitarian handles or mounting points, emphasizing a purely functional design. At its core is a transparent, reinforced chamber containing a glowing yellow liquid. This liquid serves as an energy and flux indicator, visibly reacting to environmental radiation and anomaly proximity. The liquid remains stable at low activity but becomes subtly agitated and rises within the chamber as flux increases. The device operates by drawing energy from ambient radiation and anomaly fields, producing a soft internal hum and faint vibration. It does not generate anomalies but stabilizes and interacts with them, acting as a threshold or interface between normal space and the rift. A segmented digital display is integrated into the device, showing yellow segmented text on a black background. The display presents simple system readouts such as status indicators and measurement values, with no graphical interface. Thick cables extend from the device, connecting it to the environment—buried into the ground, anchored to surfaces, or linked to auxiliary equipment. These cables are essential for stabilizing and drawing in ambient energy. The overall design is compact, portable, and field-ready, built for deployment by operatives in hostile environments. Note: This is my attempt at making a long series. Thanks to @panos for his Exclusion Zone. This is something to add to his and is a standalone spin.
