STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 27 ~

📖 Chapter 27 — The Quarantine Gate 🎬 Chapter 27.0 — Gate Closed The convoy reached the perimeter shortly before dawn. Nobody spoke as the gates emerged from the rain. The walls stretched far beyond the headlights. Concrete. Steel. Layers of fencing. Observation towers. Everything about the structure felt excessive. Like it had been built to contain something far worse than intruders. The lead DTV rolled to a stop. The gate remained shut. Nadiya switched frequencies. Nexus Two, this is Recovery Convoy Nexus Six. Nothing. She tried again. Silence. The rain continued falling. Wu Ming studied the towers. No visible personnel. No movement. No signs of life. Yet every camera seemed pointed directly at them. Anyone else feel like we're being watched? Sergei muttered. Nobody disagreed. 🎬 Chapter 27.1 — Movement Yura saw them first. Contacts. Everyone turned. Thermal screens lit up. Then more. Then more. Dozens. Hundreds. Moving through the forest. The convoy immediately came alive. Weapons checked. Turrets armed. Firing ports opened. Nadiya glanced at the telemetry display. Then frowned. The ACC signal remained active. Closing. At exactly the same time. 🎬 Chapter 27.2 — Hold The Line The first ferals emerged from the tree line moments later. They didn't hesitate. They didn't stalk. They charged. The lead DTV's turret opened fire. Tracer rounds ripped through the rain. Bodies fell. More appeared. Personnel fired from armored firing slits. The convoy transformed into a ring of steel and gunfire. Every vehicle became a bunker. Every firing port became a weapon position. Wu Ming moved between vehicles directing fields of fire. Left sector! Keep the lane open! Watch the fence! The attack intensified. Ferals swarmed across mud and wreckage. The DTVs held. Barely. 🎬 Chapter 27.3 — The Towers Wake Without warning the perimeter searchlights activated. White beams cut through the storm. Everyone looked up. The watchtowers were moving. Not manned. Automated. A second later the first autocannon fired. The result was catastrophic. Entire sections of the battlefield vanished beneath heavy fire. But something felt wrong. Wu Ming noticed immediately. The towers weren't targeting the largest groups. They were targeting the closest groups. Anything approaching the perimeter fence was annihilated. Anything attacking the convoy remained secondary. Another burst shredded a cluster of ferals attempting to scale fencing. Meanwhile dozens continued assaulting the DTV line. Yura stared. They aren't defending us. Wu Ming nodded. They're defending Nexus Two. 🎬 Chapter 27.4 — Greyfield Static burst across the radio. Then a familiar voice. Greyfield to Nexus Six. Nadiya answered immediately. Receiving. The defensive systems are operating within expected parameters. Several personnel exchanged looks. (Expected?) Their priority is containment integrity. Sergei laughed bitterly. So we're bait. Silence. Then Elias replied. Negative. ... ... You're authorized personnel. ... ... Containment remains priority. Nobody had a response to that. They cant... Not in this situation. 🎬 Chapter 27.5 — The Pattern The battle lasted nearly twenty minutes. Then Nadiya noticed something. The ferals weren't converging on the convoy. They were moving through it. Past it. Toward Nexus Two. Toward the containment complex. She overlaid telemetry tracks. Then froze. The ACC path. The feral migration path. Nearly identical. Her stomach tightened. Greyfield.... No answer. She ran the comparison again. Same result. Again. Same result. The ferals were following the ACC. 🎬 Chapter 27.6 — The Truth About Pavel Nadiya stared at the telemetry. Distance. Speed. Travel history. Hours of uninterrupted movement. No stops. No deviation. No shelter. No rest. The conclusion became unavoidable. Pavel wasn't carrying the ACC. He couldn't be. No human could. The realization hurt more than she expected. Not because it meant he was dead. Because it destroyed the last explanation she had left. A tear rolled down her cheeks. sniff... 🎬 Chapter 27.7 — First Sight The final ferals fell. The battlefield became quiet. The towers ceased fire. Moments later the gates finally opened. Slowly. Reluctantly. The convoy moved forward. Nobody celebrated. Nobody relaxed. They entered. Then the road curved. And the facility revealed itself. The containment structure dominated the landscape. Steel arches. Massive shielding. Reinforced industrial superstructure. Part fortress. Part sarcophagus. Part prison. The ground beyond dropped into a gigantic fenced excavation. Then they saw it. Through observation windows built into the containment shell. Purple light. Forty meters tall. A Rift. Far larger than any of them had ever witnessed. Suspended within the heart of the structure. Not free. Contained. Held. Watched. Fed. Protected. For several seconds nobody spoke. Then Yura quietly said: What the hell is that doing here? Wu Ming never answered. Because he was wondering something far worse. How long had it been here? THE QUARANTINE GATE Operational Summary Nexus Two perimeter reached. Entry initially denied. Automated defenses confirmed operational. Large feral migration encountered. Convoy successfully defended perimeter. Tower systems prioritized containment integrity. Feral movement pattern correlated with ACC telemetry. Pavel Orlov no longer considered probable ACC carrier. Nexus Two containment structure visually confirmed. Large contained Rift visually confirmed. Wu Ming's Observation Facility defensive doctrine remains unchanged. Personnel protection is secondary. Containment integrity remains primary.
