📖 Chapter 32 — The First Experiment 🎬 Chapter 32.0 — Experiment One The Operations Centre had started changing. Moments earlier, it had been coordinating a battlefield. Now... It resembles a laboratory. The tactical maps had disappeared. In their place stood engineering schematics of Nexus Two. The Stabilization Lattice. The Original Rift. The ACC. The Carrier. Every display now revolved around a single question. Why? Nobody spoke unnecessarily. Even the communications room had fallen unusually quiet. The only sounds came from ventilation systems, printer mechanisms and the occasional clicking of keyboards as telemetry continued streaming into Engineering. The containment variance remained on every monitor. 0.003%. Small. Almost insignificant. Yet impossible. Dr. Elias Varenko finally addressed the room. His voice remained calm. Measured. As though he were presenting research rather than responding to an unprecedented event. Dr. Elias Varenko That Anomaly Core has completed its observed behaviour. Nobody interrupted. The phenomenon within Nexus Two has not. A schematic appeared on the central display. One simple diagram. Three labels. Anomaly Core → Distance → Nexus Two Elias continued. Our objective is to determine whether proximity is sustaining the resonance. Another pause. He deliberately chose his next words. This is not a recovery operation. The room looked up. This is Experiment One. The words lingered. For the first time since the Carrier had appeared... The Directorate wasn't attempting to solve the problem. It was attempting to understand it. Wu Ming folded his arms. His question came immediately. Wu Ming Rules of engagement? Elias answered without hesitation. Defensive only. Do not engage the Carrier. Do not engage the Ferals unless necessary to preserve life. He allowed another moment of silence. Then added the sentence that surprised everyone. Data is more valuable than the canister. Several heads turned. Wu Ming understood immediately. If the experiment failed... Another ACC could eventually be recovered. What could never be recreated... Was this exact moment. This exact interaction. This exact resonance. He thinks back to the preparations Oksana did and was glad she prepared thoroughly. Engineering quietly printed the experiment protocol. At the top of the page... Only two words. EXPERIMENT ONE 🎬 Chapter 32.1 — Every Department The briefing ended. Immediately... Nexus Two came alive. Not with panic. But with discipline. Orders spread quietly throughout the fortress. Each department already knew its responsibility. Security teams occupied elevated firing positions overlooking the entrance plaza. Marksmen confirmed overlapping fields of fire covering every approach beyond the gates. Engineering technicians rolled portable Flux analysers from secure storage. Each instrument was calibrated against the Stabilization Lattice before being issued. Communications reassigned every exterior surveillance camera. No blind spots remained. Every metre surrounding the Carrier would now be recorded from multiple angles. Medical additionally converted the vehicle maintenance bay into a temporary trauma receiving station. Stretchers were prepared. Blood supplies inventoried. Emergency surgical kits unpacked. Nobody wanted expected casualties. Everyone prepared for them anyway. Logistics positioned two Directorate Tactical Vehicles directly behind the blast doors. Their engines idled quietly. Window firing slits remained closed. Turrets pointed safely upward. Ready... But deliberately non-threatening. Maintenance crews unlocked the hydraulic restraints securing the outer gates. Huge pressure gauges slowly climbed into the green. Above them... The automated watchtowers completed their own internal diagnostics. Optics aligned. Weapon systems synchronized. Targeting servos rotated through their calibration cycles before returning to standby. The entire fortress seemed to inhale together. Wu Ming walked through Engineering. Nobody interrupted. Nobody stopped him. Technicians simply handed him what they had prepared. A secure communications headset. Updated perimeter maps. A printed copy of Experiment One. Yura arrived moments later. An engineer passed him a rugged analogue Flux recorder. Another secured a compact telemetry logger to his harness. A third handed him a portable spectrometer enclosed inside a reinforced protective case. No explanations were necessary. Everyone understood exactly why each instrument mattered. Across the corridor... Oksana entered Medical. A senior nurse quietly placed another trauma pack into her hands. She looked down. The pack contained enough supplies to stabilise multiple critically wounded casualties. She closed it without comment. As she stepped back into the corridor... Wu Ming noticed the additional weight. Well prepared now? Oksana adjusted the shoulder strap. She managed a faint smile. It didn't reach her eyes. Hoping I'm carrying more than I'll ever need. Wu Ming nodded once. There was nothing else to say. Throughout Nexus Two... The final preparations continued. Not a single person rushed. Not a single movement appeared wasted. Everyone understood the same unspoken truth. The battle outside had ended. What came next... No one in history had ever attempted before. 🎬 Chapter 32.2 — Opening Procedure The warning siren sounded once. A single rising tone echoed throughout Nexus Two before fading back into silence. Every department reported ready. Security Defensive positions established. Engineering Portable Flux instrumentation calibrated. Medical Trauma station operational. Communications Exterior camera network online. Wu Ming stood before the massive blast doors. Beside him... Yura adjusted the telemetry recorder secured across his chest. Tiny mechanical pens had already begun tracing continuous lines across narrow rolls of engineering paper. Oksana quietly fastened the final buckle on her medical pack. No one checked their weapons. Today... Their rifles were not the most important equipment they carried. Deep inside the fortress... Maintenance unlocked the first hydraulic restraint. A heavy metallic impact echoed through the structure. CLANG. Another followed. Then another. One by one... The enormous locking mechanisms disengaged. Above the doors, large pressure gauges slowly climbed into their operating range. Green. Maintenance confirmed each stage. Hydraulic pressure nominal. Locking assemblies disengaged. Opening sequence commencing. The reinforced blast doors shuddered. Steel groaned against steel. Years of accumulated weight slowly began to move. Daylight appeared as a narrow line. Then widened. Rain drifted through the opening. Cold air rolled into the entrance hall. No one moved. Not yet. Outside... The battlefield remained exactly as they had left it. The Carrier stood beside the ACC. Motionless. Beyond him... Thousands of Ferals remained scattered across the devastated landscape. Some stood. Some knelt. Some simply stared toward the fortress. None advanced. None retreated. None even appeared restless. Yura quietly studied the scene. His voice was barely audible. They're still waiting. Nobody answered. Because everyone had already reached the same conclusion. 🎬 Chapter 32.3 — The Walk Wu Ming stepped through the gate first. The others followed. The rain immediately soaked their uniforms. Behind them... The blast doors remained fully open. The retrieval team advanced in silence. Each footstep echoed across wet concrete before disappearing beneath the sound of falling rain. Inside Operations... Every available monitor now displayed the same three figures. Different angles. Different lenses. Different distances. Nadiya moved from one console to another. She manually selected each camera herself. No automated tracking. She wanted to see everything. Outside... Thirty metres. The Carrier did not move. Twenty-five. Nothing. Twenty. Still nothing. Yura glanced briefly at his recorder. The telemetry remained unchanged. He quietly dictated the time. Experiment One. Approach phase. No observable response. Fifteen metres. Oksana found herself studying the man's face. Not searching for a monster. Searching... For Pavel. Rain ran down his weathered features. His clothing remained torn and stained from the recovery mission. The familiar STALKERS shoulder patch was still barely visible beneath layers of dirt and dried mud. She recognised it immediately. Ten metres. Still... Nothing. The Ferals remained as silent as statues. Not one looked away from the retrieval team. Five metres. Wu Ming slowed. He stopped beside the ACC. For several long seconds... Neither man moved. The Carrier stood quietly beside him. His breathing appeared calm. His posture relaxed. He neither defended the canister... Nor offered it. He simply watched. Wu Ming looked up. For the first time... Their eyes met. There was no hatred. No warning. No fear. Only an impossible emptiness. As though something was looking through Pavel's eyes... Without understanding what they once meant. Behind Wu Ming... Yura's recorder continued scratching steadily across the paper. No spikes. No anomalies. Everything remained... Ordinary. Wu Ming slowly crouched. He deliberately kept both hands visible. Every movement careful. Measured. Professional. His gloved fingers wrapped around the reinforced carrying handles. He paused. Waited. The Carrier did nothing. Wu Ming slowly lifted. The response was immediate. The faint humming inside the canister ceased. Instantly. The brilliant violet crystal visible behind the reinforced inspection window dimmed. Its light weakened. Purple became grey. Within only a few seconds... Nothing remained except dull lifeless stone. Yura looked down at the telemetry. His eyes widened. He almost whispered. Flux emission... Zero. The ACC had become completely inert. No one moved. No one celebrated. The experiment... Had only just begun. 🎬 Chapter 32.4 — The Voice Inside the Operations Centre... Nobody looked away. Every monitor displayed the same scene. Wu Ming standing beside the now-inert ACC. Yura studying his telemetry. Oksana frozen where she stood. And... The Carrier. Silent. Motionless. Watching. Nadiya's hand slowly rested upon the communications console. She knew she shouldn't. This wasn't part of Experiment One. No one had authorised external communication. She looked toward Elias' monitor. He said nothing. Wu Ming remained unaware. Outside... Rain continued falling. Nadiya closed her eyes for a brief moment. Then... She pressed the transmit button. Static crackled through the fortress loudspeakers. The sound carried across the battlefield. Every Feral remained still. Then her voice echoed into the rain. Pavel... Nothing happened. She swallowed. Her voice became softer. More personal. Less like an operator. More like someone refusing to let go. Pavel... It's us. Silence. Seconds passed. Nobody breathed. Then... The Carrier moved. Not his body. Only his head. Slowly... Almost mechanically... He turned toward the loudspeaker mounted above the blast gates. Every person inside Operations stood motionless. Yura forgot about his instruments. Oksana instinctively stepped closer behind Wu Ming. Wu Ming remained completely still. Even the rain seemed quieter. The Carrier continued looking toward the fortress. His expression never changed. No recognition. No confusion. No anger. Simply... Attention. Nadiya's eyes filled. She leaned closer to the microphone. Almost whispering now. Pavel... We're here. The Carrier continued watching the loudspeaker. Five seconds. Ten. Fifteen. Hope quietly spread throughout the room. Not because anyone believed he was returning. But because... For the first time... He had responded. Then... Without warning... He slowly turned away. His attention drifted back toward the empty horizon. As though whatever had briefly drawn him... No longer existed. The moment was over. No one spoke. No one knew what they had just witnessed. Finally... Yura quietly broke the silence. Reflex... No one answered him. Not because they disagreed. Because nobody wanted him to be right. 🎬 Chapter 32.5 — Experiment One Wu Ming carefully lifted the inert ACC onto the waiting transport trolley. The stone no longer emitted light. No vibration. No sound. Nothing remained to suggest it had ever contained extraordinary energy. Nexus Two no longer reacted to it, He looked toward the Carrier one final time. Nothing. The Carrier simply watched. The retrieval team slowly began returning toward Nexus Two. Every movement remained deliberate. Measured. Behind them... The Ferals never moved. Not one. The Operations Centre slowly exhaled. The experiment had succeeded. Exactly as planned. Engineering immediately began comparing live telemetry. Yura lowered his recorder onto the nearest console. The paper continued feeding through the machine. Its mechanical pen scratched steadily across the moving chart. He frowned. Something wasn't right. He checked another instrument. Then another. The readings matched. He looked toward the central display. The containment variance had not stabilised. It had not slowed. It had not reversed. It continued climbing. Exactly as before. Almost imperceptibly. Yet undeniably. Yura quietly spoke. It didn't stop. Silence. Engineering immediately began verifying the data. Independent instruments. Separate sensor arrays. Archived baselines. Every result agreed. The ACC had become inert. The anomaly core within had become what looks like a dulled crystal. But the resonance remained. Dr. Elias Varenko looked at the telemetry for a long time before speaking. His voice remained calm. But everyone recognised something they had never heard before. Uncertainty. Experiment One... He paused. Reading the numbers again. Hypothesis not supported. No one considered that a failure. It was something far worse. The experiment had worked perfectly. It had simply answered the wrong question. Outside... The retrieval team continued until past the open gates. Behind them... The Carrier remained exactly where he had been. Watching. Waiting. As rain continued falling across the battlefield. One feral slowly turned its head. DIRECTORATE NEXUS TWO INCIDENT RECORD CLASSIFICATION: INTERNAL SCIENTIFIC LOG EXPERIMENT: 001 STATUS: COMPLETE Objective Determine whether increasing the distance between the recovered Anomaly Containment Canister (ACC) and Nexus Two would terminate the observed containment resonance. Result Increasing the distance between the ACC and Nexus Two produced no measurable reduction in containment variance. Hypothesis not supported. Note: This is my attempt at making a long series.
