STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 24 ~
By EternaSky
📖CHAPTER 24 — “SIGNAL” 🎬 Chapter 24.1 — The Report The recovery convoy returned shortly after dawn. Nobody calls it a success. Nobody calls it a failure. The convoy came back, in shambles. The carrier did not. Within twenty minutes of arrival, the incident package is transmitted to Greyfield. Along with the heading of the ACC towards Greyfield. "Greyfield, this is Nexus Six." "Priority containment report." "ACC signal remains active." "Signal remains mobile." "Recovery operation terminated." "Team Lead status unknown." "Telemetry package attached." The shelter becomes silent. Rain drums softly against reinforced canvas overhead. Then: "Nexus Six, Greyfield copies." "Telemetry package received." "Stand by." No one likes hearing those words. Because everyone knows what comes next. The incident is no longer theirs. 🎬 Chapter 24.2 — MIA The official update arrives less than an hour later. Printed. Brief. Unemotional. DIRECTORATE PERSONNEL STATUS UPDATE Pavel Orlov Status: MIA Nothing else. Yura studies the report. "That's it?" Nobody answers immediately. "You expected more?" Sergei finally asks. Yura shrugs. "I don't know." "Just feels strange." Oksana folds the report. "Missing means missing." Nadiya looks up. "And that's all it means." The distinction matters. At least to her. 🎬 Chapter 24.3 — Greyfield Oversight The next transmission does not come from operations staff. It comes from Greyfield command. The shelter speaker crackles. "Greyfield to Nexus Six." Everyone immediately recognizes the voice. Dr. Elias Varenko. Not because he speaks often. Because when he does, people listen. "Telemetry reviewed." "Incident classification updated." "ACC event escalated to Directorate oversight." "Continue observation." "No pursuit authorization." "No recovery deployment." Then silence. for a while. "Further instructions will follow." Then the channel closes. No speech. No reassurance. No explanation. Just decisions. Exactly as expected. A fist hammers onto the table. Nadiya. Wu Ming steps out into the rain. Okasana heads to the Medical tent to help the injured. Yura and Sergei, in silence. 🎬 Chapter 24.4 — Flux The medical shelter never truly sleeps. Not during recovery cycles. An exhausted survey operative arrives barely able to remain standing. Oksana prepares a stabilizer injector. Dark yellow Flux settles inside the chamber. Minutes after administration: The operative sits upright. Focused. Alert. Functional. Two hours later he will crash into deep exhaustion. Everyone knows it. Including him. A younger recruit watches. "That stuff always hit like that?" Oksana secures the injector. "Only when you ask too much from it." 🎬 Chapter 24.5 — The Pattern The telemetry route keeps bothering Nadiya. Not because it exists. Because it behaves incorrectly. She reviews it again. Then again. Then again. Eventually Sergei notices. "You're still on that?" Nadiya, fiddling with the map. "Something doesn't fit." Sergei looks at the map. "What?" Nadiya studies the map. "Parts of this route look deliberate." "Parts don't." Wu Ming finally looks up. "Meaning?" Nadiya turns around. "Meaning it doesn't feel like one set of decisions." The shelter becomes quiet. Nobody laughs. Because everyone has noticed it too. 🎬 Chapter 24.6 — Not Greyfield The evening telemetry update changes everything. The projected route stabilizes. More data. Better accuracy. The answer appears. The destination is not Greyfield. Never was. Looked like it was but... The signal is heading toward an abandoned Directorate Forward Nexus. One shut down months ago. One that should be empty. One en route to Greyfield. Yura stares at the screen. "Why there?" Nobody has an answer. Wu Ming studies the route. Then quietly: "It's not escaping." Several heads turn. "It's traveling." Nobody likes that explanation. Because it makes too much sense, at least, to them. 🎬 Chapter 24.7 — Gathering Night settles over the Forward Nexu, Nexus Six. Rain returns. Nadiya remains at her station. A telemetry alert appears. One contact. Then another. Then another. All near destination. All converging. Not random movement. Not environmental noise. Gathering. Around the ACC. For the first time since Pavel disappeared, the carrier stops being the most important thing on the screen. Something is waiting for it. And despite everything— Nadiya still refuses to archive Pavel Orlov's file. SIGNAL EVENT STATUS Personnel Pavel Orlov Last visual contact during hostile engagement Body not recovered Death unconfirmed Current Status: MIA ACC Status Active Mobile Outside Directorate control Directorate Directive Issued by: Dr. Elias Varenko Continue observation Maintain telemetry tracking No pursuit authorization No recovery deployment New Development Destination identified as abandoned Directorate Forward Nexus #2 Multiple unidentified contacts detected Converging activity increasing Note: This is my attempt at making a long series.
