📖 CHAPTER 23 — “THE PURSUIT” 🎬 Scene 23.0 — The Signal Rainwater drips steadily through torn metal plating inside the destroyed HAULER. The recovery squad moves carefully through the wreckage while floodlights sweep across broken containment restraints and scattered equipment. No bodies. Still almost no bodies. That disturbs everyone more than visible casualties would. Nadiya reconnects a portable telemetry unit beside the shattered cargo compartment. Static flickers across the cracked display. Then stabilizes. Her face tightens immediately. "...signal active." Everyone turns toward her. Nadiya checks the readings again slowly. "The ACC is still transmitting." Wu Ming immediately looks deeper into the dead woodland beyond the crash site. Because somehow— that feels worse. 🎬 Scene 23.1 — The Decision The rain grows heavier while the squad regroups beside the convoy. Pavel studies the telemetry projection spread across the side of the nearest HAULER. The moving signal drifts deeper through Sector Eight woodland. Still moving. Still consistent. Wu Ming speaks first. "We leave." Pavel does not look up immediately. "We still have a recovery window." Wu Ming steps closer. "That convoy died trying to carry it." "The original team was isolated." Pavel finally turns toward him. "They had one transport. Minimal support. No recovery backup." Wu Ming shakes his head immediately. "And now we're following them into the same route." The surrounding personnel stay silent. Because neither man sounds wrong. Pavel gestures toward the active convoy. "We still have two HAULERs. Security teams. Telemetry support. Medics." He points toward the moving signal. "If we abandon the ACC now, Directorate command sends another convoy tomorrow blind into this same situation." Nobody argues with that. Because everyone knows it is true. Pavel lowers his voice slightly. "We're already here. We still have operational strength. This may be the best recovery chance we get before the signal disappears deeper into the zone." Wu Ming stares at him for several long seconds. Then: "...something is following that core." The rain falls harder between them. Pavel answers quietly. "Then we recover it before something worse does." Silence. No one fully agrees. No one fully disagrees. That is what makes the decision dangerous. 🎬 Scene 23.2 — Into Sector Eight The convoy pushes deeper before nightfall. Floodlights cut weakly through dead woodland and industrial fog while telemetry interference worsens kilometer by kilometer. Nadiya continually recalibrates the portable tracking equipment. "Signal drift increasing." "Environmental?" Pavel asks again. This time she hesitates longer. "...not entirely." Nobody likes that answer either. The deeper roads show signs of rapid movement: broken branches drag marks abandoned gear partially collapsed route stakes Everything points the same direction. Something moved through here quickly. And repeatedly. Wu Ming watches the surrounding trees continuously through narrow firing slits. Waiting. 🎬 Scene 23.3 — The Lost Sergei spots movement first. A figure stumbling through fog between dead trees. Damaged Directorate gear. Broken respirator. Mud-covered harness. One of the missing convoy personnel. The operative freezes when floodlights hit him. Then begins backing away instinctively. "Pavel…?" Recognition flickers weakly across his face. But something underneath his skin moves wrong. Subtle. Unstable. Oksana immediately realizes the FL contamination has progressed further. The man keeps staring toward the convoy vehicles. Toward the containment transport. Not toward the people. His breathing becomes uneven. Painfully focused. "We couldn't carry it anymore..." The words barely leave him properly. Then more movement appears deeper in the trees. Additional silhouettes. More missing personnel. Watching silently through fog. Not fully human anymore. Not fully gone either. Nobody opens fire immediately. Because everyone still recognizes them. 🎬 Scene 23.4 — Pressure The Ferals arrive gradually. Not as a horde. As pressure. Movement between trees. Low growls somewhere beyond floodlight range. Fast shapes repositioning through dead woodland. Tracking. Nadiya checks telemetry again. Her voice lowers immediately. "The ACC signal is getting closer." That makes no sense. The convoy stops instinctively. Then: a distant metallic impact echoes somewhere deeper in the trees. The sound of containment plating dragging across concrete. Everyone hears it. Nobody speaks afterward. 🎬 Scene 23.5 — Collapse The first attack happens during withdrawal preparation. Fast. Confused. Violent. One of the attached scouts panics after a contaminated operative suddenly lunges from fog cover. Gunfire erupts. Floodlights swing wildly across trees and rain. Ferals immediately converge toward the noise. Pavel starts reorganizing the retreat line instantly. "Move! Back to the convoy!" Another scout slips in mud while retreating. A Feral reaches him before he can recover. Pavel turns back immediately. Wu Ming sees it happen. "Pavel!" Too late. Pavel drags the younger scout upward while firing blindly into the fog. The recovery almost works. Then multiple Ferals hit the rear line simultaneously. The formation collapses instantly. Wu Ming pushes toward Pavel through the chaos. Sergei grabs him violently. "We lose everyone if you stop moving!" Pavel shouts through gunfire and rain: "GO!" Not heroic. Angry. Because he already knows what happens if the convoy stalls. Then the fog swallows him completely beneath floodlights, movement, gunfire, and rushing shadows. The convoy barely escapes. Nobody sees the exact moment Pavel dies. That somehow makes it worse. 🎬 Scene 23.6 — The Figure The convoy drives hard through collapsing visibility while Ferals continue tracking movement beyond floodlight range. Inside the rear compartment: one scout bleeding heavily Sergei injured Nadiya struggling to stabilize telemetry Oksana administering emergency low-dose stabilizers Wu Ming watches the forest again through the rear firing slit. Then sees it. A lone figure standing motionless between dead trees. Watching the convoy pass. Same height. Same posture. Almost identical to him. The figure does not pursue. Does not attack. Only watches silently through rain and fog. Then disappears behind drifting ash. Even this time: Wu Ming still says nothing. But Oksana sees his face afterward. And understands: he saw it again. 🎬 Scene 23.7 — Return The convoy reaches the Forward Nexus near dawn. Nobody waits outside this time. The camp already understands from the returning vehicle count. One HAULER damaged. Personnel missing. Containment unrecovered. No one speaks while the survivors unload. The entire camp feels quieter now. Not shocked. Preparing. 🎬 Scene 23.8 — Back at the Nexus Inside the communications shelter, Nadiya reconnects the portable telemetry unit one final time. Weak signal fluctuations ripple across the cracked display. Then stabilize. Everyone nearby watches silently. The ACC signal still exists. Still moving. Direction: toward Directorate territory. The place becomes completely silent. Because now: this is no longer only a containment failure. Something is bringing the core closer. DIRECTORATE FIELD OBSERVATION SUMMARY CONVOY PURSUIT INCIDENTS INCIDENT CHARACTERISTICS Recent convoy recovery operations indicate increasing evidence of: sustained pursuit behavior containment tracking coordinated interception patterns escalating aggression surrounding active anomaly cores Observed behavior differs from: standard territorial Ferals unstable Drifter migration ordinary anomaly displacement events NOTABLE FIELD OBSERVATIONS Recovered telemetry suggests hostile entities may track: active Flux concentrations moving containment systems ACC energy signatures Behavioral persistence remains unusually high even after personnel disengagement. OPERATIONAL CONCERN Traditional Directorate convoy doctrine assumes: distance and mobility reduce escalation probability. Recent incidents indicate: mobile containment transport may itself attract hostile anomaly-zone activity. Further operational review pending. TEMPORARY FIELD RECOMMENDATIONS Pending further investigation: avoid isolated containment transport increase convoy spacing maintain active telemetry verification reduce stationary field delays avoid prolonged pursuit beyond recovery windows No official containment revision has yet been authorized. As if they're hunting... Note: This is my attempt at making a long series.
