πŸ“– CHAPTER 20 β€” β€œRETURN ROUTE” 🎬 Scene 20.0 β€” Return Movement The return route always feels longer. Even when the map says otherwise. The six-person formation moves steadily through dead woodland beneath drifting ash and warped grey skies. Pavel leads. Nadiya tracks route drift beside him. Yura and Sergei alternate carrying the compact ACC harness. Oksana remains near center formation monitoring periodic telemetry checks. Wu Ming circles constantly around the group without conscious pattern. Watching. Listening. The ACC hums softly beneath reinforced containment locks. Small enough to carry. Dangerous enough to reshape the environment around it. Nobody talks much. Fatigue replaces adrenaline quickly inside the Rift. 🎬 Scene 20.1 β€” Drift The Rift feels unstable today. Not violently. Subtly. Ash shifts sideways against weak wind. Dead trees appear slightly displaced from earlier route markers. Broken road signs sit where they should not. Nadiya checks the map twice. Then a third time. "Route shifted again." Pavel keeps walking. "Enough to reroute?" "No." ... "Enough to notice." Nobody likes that answer. Wu Ming watches the surrounding forest silently. The sensation returns again. Something pacing them beyond visibility. 🎬 Scene 20.2 β€” Tracking The first sighting comes from Sergei. "Movement. Left side." The formation tightens immediately. No panic. Only routine. Low silhouettes move briefly between dead trees before disappearing again. Ferals. Tracking the ACC. Not attacking. Yet. Oksana checks telemetry instinctively. Containment stable. Environmental pressure fluctuating inconsistently. Still safe. Still wrong. Yura adjusts the transport harness uneasily. "I liked it better when they tried killing us immediately." Nobody laughs. 🎬 Scene 20.3 β€” Pressure Telemetry checks become more frequent. Nobody officially ordered it. The habit simply spread after the previous incident. Oksana checks the ACC again while walking. The readings stabilize briefly. Then drift upward again. "Containment pressure still fluctuating." Wu Ming notices her concern instantly. "Dangerous?" "No." ... "But it shouldn't still be reacting like this." Ahead of themβ€” Pavel hears everything without turning around. His pace increases slightly anyway. 🎬 Scene 20.4 β€” Halt The team pauses briefly beside the remains of a collapsed industrial checkpoint swallowed slowly by dead vegetation and ash. The ACC is lowered carefully onto cracked concrete beneath partial cover. Everyone breathes differently once the weight leaves their shoulders. Yura flexes both arms. "Next time we find a smaller apocalypse rock." "That's not how geology works," Nadiya replies automatically while recalibrating route telemetry. Sergei remains standing near the ruined entrance watching the forest quietly. Always watching. Oksana sits briefly beside the ACC while reviewing telemetry logs. Wu Ming remains standing nearby. She notices. Again. "You know sitting doesn't reduce combat efficiency." "I'm fine." "You said that four hours ago." He lets out almost a smile. Then β€” movement. Wu Ming turns instantly toward the treeline. Nothing there anymore. 🎬 Scene 20.5 β€” The Echo The forest becomes quiet again. Too quiet. Even the ash seems slower somehow. Wu Ming stops walking briefly. Far ahead β€” between distorted dead trees β€” a human-shaped silhouette stands motionless within the haze. Too still. Too distant. Too clear. Not a Drifter. Not human. Watching them. The air distorts softly around it. Then β€” gone. Oksana notices Wu Ming staring. "What did you see?" He keeps watching the empty space another second. "...nothing." Not entirely true. 🎬 Scene 20.6 β€” Extraction Point Hours later β€” the Rift opening point finally becomes visible through distortion haze. Temporary floodlights. Portable stabilization stakes. Marked extraction pylons. A parked DTV-12 HAULER partially hidden beneath camouflage netting. Nothing permanent. Nothing safe. Only another fragile operational foothold inside hostile territory. Portable field emitters still generating the active Rift boundary. Pavel exhales quietly for the first time in hours. "Boundary intact." Nadiya confirms route alignment. "Exit path stable." The team keeps moving. Nobody relaxes completely until they're through. 🎬 Scene 20.7 β€” Exit One by one β€” the squad crosses the Rift boundary. Reality stabilizes abruptly with each step. Pavel first. Then Nadiya. Sergei. Oksana. Wu Ming. Yura carries the ACC carefully through unstable ground before stepping across last with the ACC. Last object out. Per revised protocol. Outside the Rift β€” They immediately begin closure procedures. Portable emitters activate. Containment stakes illuminate. Flux suppression sequences engage. The Rift begins collapsing inward slowly behind them. Controlled. Procedural. Routine. At least normally. 🎬 Scene 20.8 β€” Transit The ACC is secured into reinforced restraints inside the DTV-12 HAULER cargo compartment. The team climbs aboard afterward. Nobody speaks much once the transport begins moving. The vehicle rumbles slowly through broken roads and dead industrial wilderness beneath drifting ash and weak floodlights. Inside: exhausted silence rattling equipment vibrating steel walls occasional telemetry checks operational fatigue settling into bone-deep exhaustion Oksana eventually lowers her telemetry device. "Pressure finally stabilizing." Yura leans back against the steel wall. "See? The universe still tolerates us." "Temporarily," Nadiya answers without looking up. Sergei quietly watches darkness through a narrow armored firing slit. Wu Ming remains silent. Still thinking about what he saw. 🎬 Scene 20.9 β€” End Scene The DTV-12 HAULER moves slowly through dead woodland beneath drifting ash and weak industrial floodlights. Wu Ming stares through one of the narrow reinforced side firing slits into the passing darkness outside. Then β€” between distant dead treesβ€” he sees it again. The same silhouette. Standing motionless beside the road. Watching the transport pass. Impossible. The Rift is already closed. The vehicle continues forward through darkness. When Wu Ming looks back again β€” nothing remains there. Only drifting ash beneath dead trees. But this time β€” he no longer believes it was part of the Rift.
