📖 CHAPTER 17 — “STANDARD CONDITIONS” 🎬 Scene 17.0 — Rotation Notice The assignment arrives before dawn. Routine. Expected. Wu Ming’s terminal flickers softly inside the dim quarters. ROTATION ASSIGNMENT SOUTHERN EXTRACTION WINDOW RIFT OPERATION S-17 LOW INSTABILITY CLASSIFICATION Below it— updated containment procedures. ACC extraction priority revised. Core carriers no longer authorized to exit ahead of remaining field personnel unless collapse conditions become unavoidable. Elias’ changes. Already active. Wu Ming reads the notice once. Memorizes it immediately. Across the corridor— another door opens. Oksana steps out quietly carrying folded field gear beneath one arm, hair still loose from sleep. She notices him already prepared. Already ready. Neither speaks at first. They simply begin heading off together. Routine. 🎬 Scene 17.1 — Preparation Greyfield is already moving. Not loudly. Constantly. Equipment carts roll through concrete corridors beneath exposed pipes and industrial lighting. Personnel rotate tagged supply crates between logistics rails while sealed Flux containers disappear into transport racks. The deployment wing smells faintly of: - oil - heated metal - damp fabric - sterilizing fluid Wu Ming checks magazine seals against his vest one by one. Practical repetition. Survival through routine. Nearby— Oksana replaces the glowing yellow Flux stabilizer injectors clipped onto her medic harness. One at a time. Measured. Her PFM-86 monitor hums softly against her wrist while segmented telemetry stabilizes slowly. FL acceptable. For now. 🎬 Scene 17.2 — Logistics Intake The deployment intake section is crowded. Temporary staging before rotation. Operatives move between supply rails beneath hanging industrial lights while logistics personnel issue tagged field equipment. A mechanic strips a damaged rifle across an open workbench nearby. Someone argues over cracked filtration masks further down the lane. Karim Dastan sorts salvaged batteries into separate crates beside a transport pallet. "These still work." A logistics runner stares at him. "They melted." Karim shrugs. "Partially." Nobody nearby cares enough to continue arguing. Further along the intake rails— Pavel Orlov tightens the straps around his gloves while smoking quietly beside a deployment crate. Veteran habit. He notices Wu Ming approaching. "Support slot again?" Wu Ming checks his deployment tag. [SECONDARY OPERATIVE / CONTAINMENT SUPPORT] "Less paperwork." Pavel snorts softly through cigarette smoke. "Convenient." Both understand the real reason. Neither mentions Oksana. Nearby— Yura Belik adjusts his harness while balancing too much equipment over one shoulder. "You finally getting old?" "Experience," Pavel answers immediately. Yura ignores him. "Good. If something kills us, leadership goes first." Pavel exhales smoke slowly. "That's usually how leadership works." A few nearby operatives laugh quietly. Further down the intake lane— Nadiya Vecher nearly drops a stack of waterproof route tablets while rushing between operational desks. Nobody reacts. Apparently this happens often. 🎬 Scene 17.3 — Briefing The briefing takes place beside the departure hangar. No command room. Just: folding tables projected route maps hanging work lights stacked supply crates weather telemetry half-empty coffee containers Temporary. Everything temporary. A Rift operations coordinator gestures toward the route projection hovering above the table. "Opening window remains stable." Highlighted sectors pulse softly across the display. "Expected operational duration four to six hours." Another marker appears deeper along the route. "Core formation confirmed approximately eleven hours ago." Secondary overlays appear: terrain drift known mutant movement salvage markers unstable pockets route deviations Nadiya updates survey notes rapidly beside the projection. The coordinator gestures toward Pavel. "Squad lead." Then toward Wu Ming. "Containment support and secondary medic." No one questions it. This arrangement has quietly become normal. Oksana notices Wu Ming stepping aside from command again. Says nothing. But her expression softens slightly. 🎬 Scene 17.4 — Transit The convoy leaves Greyfield shortly after sunrise. Transport carriers move through dead industrial roads beneath overcast skies while support vehicles follow behind in staggered formation. Outside the transport windows: dead forests rusted utility towers collapsed checkpoints abandoned roads disappearing into fog old route markers half-swallowed by vegetation The Zone stretches endlessly. Yura breaks the silence first. "You think scavengers reached the sector already?" Pavel shrugs. "If they did, they probably took the easy salvage first." Another operative further down the transport answers without looking up. "Unless the mutants got there before them." Nobody reacts strongly enough for it to become conversation. Normal. Wu Ming sits beside Oksana near the rear ramp. Closer than normal. Intentional. 🎬 Scene 17.5 — Forward Nexus The Forward Nexus emerges through fog roughly an hour later. Temporary structures spread across a muddy clearing beside transport carriers and portable tower arrays. Nothing here looks permanent. Cargo containers stacked into makeshift walls. Portable generators humming beneath tarp covers. Floodlights hanging from scaffold poles. Fuel drums lined beside mobile repair stations. Personnel move constantly: reclaimers unloading salvage scouts returning from perimeter routes cartographers updating field maps logistics crews sorting tagged supplies wandering scavengers trading information for food and ammunition Everything feels assembled around necessity. Ready to disappear once operations conclude. Further out— other operational teams prepare separately for completely different objectives. No one here stays long. 🎬 Scene 17.6 — Departure The six-person extraction team leaves the Nexus alone. No support convoy. No perimeter escort. No backup waiting further ahead. Just them. Portable Rift-opening equipment hangs from reinforced harness frames carried between the squad. Containment rails strapped along equipment packs. Telemetry beacons packed beside ammunition and medical kits. The rest of the Nexus continues operating behind them. Other teams head toward: reclamation sectors survey routes perimeter scouting zones salvage sites Different missions. Different risks. The team with Wu Ming and Oksana led by Pavel gradually leaves the noise behind. The further they travel— the quieter the world becomes. 🎬 Scene 17.7 — Field Transit The team moves through dead woodland and collapsed industrial terrain beneath low grey skies. Old survey markers hang from broken trees. Portable route beacons pulse softly along partially stable corridors. The ground shifts from cracked asphalt to wet soil and dead roots. Nobody speaks much. This part is familiar. Pavel leads naturally at the front. Wu Ming remains near Oksana toward the middle of formation beside the containment equipment. Intentional positioning. Veterans notice. No one comments. A distant howl echoes somewhere far deeper within the Zone. Yura looks up briefly. "Probably not us." "That's optimistic," Pavel answers. The team continues forward. 🎬 Scene 17.8 — Rift Site Preparation They reach the opening site shortly before midday. A dead clearing surrounded by warped trees and collapsed concrete remnants. Quiet. Too quiet. The team immediately begins setup. Portable stabilization pylons are driven into the mud surrounding the designated opening point. Telemetry beacons activate one by one. Yellow Flux fluid circulates visibly through reinforced tubing connected to compact stabilization rigs. No support personnel. Only the six of them. Nadiya calibrates route telemetry while Oksana verifies FL readings against environmental drift. Pavel checks perimeter sightlines. Wu Ming secures the ACC containment rails beside the central stabilizer frame. Everyone already knows their role. Routine. 🎬 Scene 17.9 — Controlled Opening The stabilizers activate. A low vibration spreads through the clearing. Reality slowly begins pulling apart. Purple distortion spreads across the dead trees while drifting ash lifts unnaturally into the air. The Rift forms carefully. Measured. Controlled. Nobody reacts dramatically. This is work. Pavel chambers his rifle calmly. Wu Ming checks the containment seals one final time beside Oksana. Her PFM-86 telemetry rises slightly. Still stable. The Rift stabilizes fully. Pavel looks toward the team. "Standard conditions." Then— the six of them move forward together into distorted light. Alone. STANDARD RIFT EXTRACTION PROCEDURE GREYFIELD OPERATIONAL SUMMARY — FIELD ISSUE REVISION All controlled Rift extraction deployments follow standardized operational sequencing intended to maximize anomaly recovery success while minimizing Flux Load escalation and personnel loss. Standard extraction teams consist of five to six field operatives operating independently without external support once deployment begins. Typical field composition includes: Squad Lead Containment Specialist Medic / Flux Stabilization Personnel Route Survey Attachment General Field Operatives Additional specialist roles may be assigned depending on projected Rift instability classification. Standard Deployment Sequence 1 — Deployment Staging Personnel and equipment are assigned through temporary Forward Nexus operational sites established near active extraction sectors. Forward Nexus sites are temporary and modular. They are dismantled once regional operational value declines. 2 — Transit To Opening Site Extraction teams transport portable stabilization equipment manually to designated Rift opening coordinates. No external support accompanies the team beyond this stage. 3 — Controlled Rift Opening Portable stabilization pylons and Flux regulators are deployed to establish a temporary entry corridor into the Rift environment. Operational windows remain unstable and time-sensitive. 4 — Rift Traversal Teams enter the Rift environment to: locate anomaly core formation retrieve associated containment materials conduct route verification recover salvage where applicable Mutant encounters and environmental instability are considered normal operational conditions. 5 — Core Extraction Recovered anomaly cores are secured within an ACC containment unit for extraction. Under revised Greyfield containment doctrine: ACC carriers are no longer authorized to exit the Rift ahead of remaining team members unless collapse conditions become unavoidable. 6 — Extraction And Recovery All surviving personnel return independently to the Forward Nexus for: Flux Load evaluation decontamination containment transfer equipment recovery operational reporting Operational loss rates remain within acceptable thresholds under standard conditions.
