STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 19 ~

π CHAPTER 19 β βCONTAINMENTβ π¬ Scene 19.0 β Setup The clearing changes as soon as containment begins. Everyone moves with practiced familiarity. Pavel and Nadiya unload the ACC containment assembly from reinforced equipment sleds while Yura secures stabilization rails into fractured ground nearby. Sergei silently establishes rear perimeter coverage without being asked. Routine. Wu Ming remains near Oksana while scanning the surrounding treeline. Close enough to react immediately. Far enough not to interfere. Oksana kneels beside a portable telemetry case while monitoring environmental Flux drift across her PFM-86 display. Yellow segmented readings flicker steadily across scratched glass. FL rising gradually. Expected. Nothing abnormal. Yet. π¬ Scene 19.1 β ACC Deployment The ACC assembly unfolds mechanically beside the suspended anomaly core. Industrial. Heavy. Ugly. Nothing about it feels advanced. Only functional. Reinforced containment rails lock together around the core site while Flux regulators hum softly beneath exposed wiring and circulating yellow fluid lines. Pavel checks stabilization pressure manually. Again. Then again. Nadiya watches telemetry synchronization beside him. "Containment field holding." Yura secures the final locking clamps around the transport frame. "Ugliest machine in Greyfield." "Still works," Pavel answers. "Usually." Nobody likes that answer. Wu Ming continues scanning the surrounding forest instead of the containment process itself. Watching movement. Watching silence. Oksana notices. "Still expecting trouble?" "No." ... "Just checking." ... She studies him briefly before returning to telemetry readings. π¬ Scene 19.2 β Resonance The anomaly core reacts the moment containment synchronization begins. Not violently. The air simply changes. A low vibration spreads through the clearing while loose ash slowly lifts from the ground around the suspended core. Purple distortion pulses faintly beneath fractured earth. Oksana watches telemetry climb steadily. "Environmental pressure increasing." Pavel doesn't look away from containment alignment. "Expected." Nadiya frowns at her route monitor. "Signal drift's higher than projected." Yura glances upward at floating debris rotating slowly above the clearing. "That's comforting." Nobody answers him. Wu Ming notices the surrounding forest again. Still quiet. Too quiet. No Ferals. No distant movement. No sound at all. For a brief secondβ he catches movement between dead trees. A silhouette. Standing perfectly still. Then gone again. His hand tightens slightly against the rifle grip. Sergei notices the movement this time. "You see something?" Wu Ming keeps watching the trees another second before answering. "No." Not entirely true. π¬ Scene 19.3 β Synchronization The team falls naturally into rhythm as containment continues. Pavel stabilizes the ACC alignment. Nadiya tracks environmental drift. Yura adjusts the transport frame. Sergei maintains rear security silently. Oksana monitors Flux exposure and personnel telemetry. Wu Ming moves constantly between sightlines without needing instruction. Experienced people doing dangerous work they have repeated too many times already. No wasted movement. No dramatic tension. Only discipline. Oksana reaches toward one of the stabilization valves as containment pressure fluctuates briefly. Wu Ming steadies the equipment frame beside her before she even asks. Instinctive coordination. She glances toward him briefly. Small nod. Nothing more. The containment field stabilizes again. π¬ Scene 19.4 β Secured The anomaly core lowers slowly into the ACC frame. The moment the containment clamps fully engageβ the clearing becomes quieter. Not safer. Just quieter. The suspended distortion weakens while the surrounding Rift environment settles slightly. Floating debris drops softly back toward the ground. Pavel studies the containment readouts carefully. "Core secured." Nobody celebrates. Yura finally exhales. "Good. I was starting to miss normal physics." "You're assuming physics outside is normal," Nadiya replies immediately. "Fair." Sergei quietly reloads his rifle beside the treeline without joining the conversation. Wu Ming keeps watching the forest. Still wrong. He cannot explain why. π¬ Scene 19.5 β Unease Containment telemetry should already be stabilizing. Instead β the readings continue fluctuating intermittently. Not dangerously. Just inconsistently. Oksana notices first. "Pressure isn't settling properly." Pavel checks the ACC housing again. "Containment's intact." Nadiya studies drifting telemetry lines across her monitor. "The Rift response lagged." Yura shoulders the transport harness carefully. "So what does that mean?" Nobody answers immediately. Because nobody fully knows. Wu Ming watches the surrounding trees again. For half a second β he sees movement deeper within the forest. Several figures this time. Too distant to identify. Then the distortion shifts. Gone again. Sergei notices Wu Ming watching the treeline repeatedly now. "You really don't like this place today." Wu Ming finally answers quietly. "No." π¬ Scene 19.6 β Return Movement The team prepares to move. Containment rails lock into transport position. The ACC unit hums softly beneath reinforced clamps and circulating Flux coolant lines. Pavel takes point again. Sergei shifts toward rear security. Yura and Nadiya secure the transport frame between them. Wu Ming naturally falls back beside Oksana. Protective distance. Familiar distance. No one comments anymore. It's become normal. The six-person team leaves the clearing slowly beneath warped grey skies while drifting ash follows silently through dead woodland. Behind them β the Rift clearing grows quiet again. Too quiet. π¬ Scene 19.7 β Something Watching Far deeper within the forest β movement emerges slowly between distorted trees. Not Ferals. Not Drifters. Something else. Barely visible through atmospheric distortion. Watching the extraction team disappear into the distance. Then β the silhouette dissolves quietly back into the Rift itself. As though it had never been there at all.
