STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 14 ~
By EternaSky
📖 CHAPTER 14 — "RETURN FLOW" 🎬 Scene 14.0 — Corridor Flow They don’t linger in the corridors. The corridor is quieter. Not empty— just… less rushed. Concrete walls. Exposed piping running along the ceiling. Reinforced glass panels set into the structure—darkened. Their footsteps carry. Measured. Even. No one speaks. They pass others along the way. Some coming off shift. Some heading deeper in. A few glances. Recognition. No one stops them. A pair of operatives stand off to the side. Mid-conversation. Their voices lower as Wu Ming and Oksana pass. Oksana adjusts the strap on her shoulder. The weight is familiar. Wu Ming doesn’t look around. He knows where he’s going. The air changes as they move. More noise ahead. More movement. The corridor widens. Opens. Metal. Voices. Activity. [Intake] They step into it— without breaking stride. 🎬 Scene 14.1 - Intake They don’t stop when they enter. No one does. The space is already abuzz. Gear lands on metal tables. Hands move in immediately. Sorting. Tagging. Taking. Worn floors marked by drag lines. Open crates. Exposed wiring along the walls. Someone passes beside them— “Drop it there — Intake’ll sort it.” Another voice, sharper— “Keep it moving.” Wu Ming steps forward. No hesitation. Oksana follows. Half a step behind. They reach the table. Gear goes down. Hands take over. Checking. Turning. Removing pieces. All their gear goes through here. No one explains anything. Simply routine. 🎬 Scene 14.2 - Recognition They feel it before they see it. A shift in attention. Not focused. Not direct. Just— noticed. “They’re back.” “Yeah.” “Both of them?” “Looks like it.” A STALKER nearby glances once. “Deep run?” Wu Ming answers without looking— “Yeah.” That’s enough. The moment passes. 🎬 Scene 14.3 - Flow Forward They move on. No instruction. No direction given. The path is already known. The noise shifts as they leave intake. Less chaotic. More deliberate. The space opens. Tools laid out in order. Racks of gear in various states of repair. Panels open. Components exposed. This is where things get fixed. 🎬 Scene 14.4 - Misha He’s already working. Not waiting. Hands moving through a disassembled pack. Checking stitching. Reinforcing tension points. He looks up once. Sees them. “You look like shit.” ... ... “But you made it.” Wu Ming: “Yeah.” Oksana sets her pack down. Misha pulls it in immediately. No pause. “You ran the ground hard.” Wu Ming: “Didn’t have a choice.” Misha grunts. Agreement. His hands keep moving. But his eyes— shift once. Past them. Then back to the work. 🎬 Scene 14.5 - Leona She doesn’t arrive. She’s just there. Still. Composed. Already tracking everything. Her gaze lands on their roughed up gears first. Then Wu Ming. Then Oksana. “Back already.” Wu Ming: “Yeah. Leona.” "Since last night." She nods once. To Oksana— “You holding up?” Oksana: “I’m fine.” "Stable." Leona watches her a fraction longer. Then accepts it. She steps past them. Adjusts a tagged item on the table mid-process. No instruction given. Someone nearby immediately corrects the rest. 🎬 Scene 14.6 - Alignment Misha straightens slightly. Subtle. But there. Leona doesn’t look at him. “Don’t let that batch sit.” Misha: “Wasn’t going to.” She moves on. His eyes follow her. Just for a moment. Then back down. Hands working harder now. 🎬 Scene 14.7 - Supply Oksana shifts to the adjacent station. A technician slides items across. Measured. Efficient. Fresh syringes. Stabilised vials. Medical refills. No delay. “You’re running higher than baseline.” Oksana: “Yeah.” “Keep an eye on it.” She nods. The exchange ends. 🎬 Scene 14.8 - Replacement Wu Ming rolls his shoulder once. Testing. Weight feels right. Oksana adjusts her kit. Checks placement. Their roughed up gear is gone. Their replacements issued. Nothing lingers. They’re good now. Not rested. 🎬 Scene 14.9 - Invitation Leona returns. This time — direct. “You two eaten?” They both look at her. A brief pause. Wu Ming: “Not yet.” Oksana: “No.” Leona nods. “Come.” (beat) “Cafeteria’s not full yet.” Not an order. Not casual. Something in between. 🎬 Scene 14.10 - Observation As they turn— Misha looks up again. Not at Wu Ming. Not at Oksana. At Leona's back as she leaves. Then back down. Work resumes. Faster now. 🎬 Scene 14.11 - Transition They leave logistics. The environment changes as they move. Less metal. Less noise. More voices. People sitting. Talking. Eating. Not operational. Human. 🎬 Scene 14.12 - Entry They reach the cafeteria. Leona steps in first. Wu Ming and Oksana follow. The cafeteria is crowded. But everyone observes them as they walk by. 👩 Leona Kade 📦 Leona Kade is the Directorate’s senior logistics architect operating out of Greyfield’s embedded command infrastructure, where she functions less as a traditional officer and more as a systems-level stabilizer for field operations. She is known for her quiet authority, precise judgment, and an ability to translate chaotic frontline conditions into executable supply logic without emotional distortion interfering with outcomes. Physically, she presents as early-to-mid 30s, slender and composed, with a subtly angular face, defined jawline, and controlled posture that rarely breaks from professional neutrality. Her dark brown hair is typically tied back in a restrained low knot, kept deliberately functional rather than expressive. Her eyes—dark brown to grey-brown—are observant and analytical, giving the impression she is continuously parsing multiple operational layers at once. She wears a minimalist Directorate logistics uniform in dark charcoal and muted olive, marked by wear consistent with long-term field adjacency rather than office detachment. She carries no weapons; instead, her primary tool is a administrative interface displaying segmented logistics and deployment data. Within the Greyfield system, Leona is best understood as a “behind-the-line decision node” — a person whose influence rarely appears in direct action reports but consistently determines whether operations remain structurally viable. Her leadership style is indirect, strategic, and deeply procedural, favoring long-horizon stability over short-term tactical gain. She does not seek visibility, and in many cases actively avoids it, preferring outcomes over attribution. “She maintains calm coherence of field operations under degraded conditions or rapidly declining supplies; highest reliability even under systemic stress.” Note: This is my attempt at making a long series.
