📖 CHAPTER 11 — "DEBRIEF" 🎬 Scene 11.1 — Entry The door opens. Not fully. Just enough. “Inside.” They enter. Single file. Wu Ming first. Oksana follows. Misha. Hanae. Adrian last. The door closes behind them— sealed. 🎬 Scene 11.2 — Positioning Chairs. Pre-set. Facing forward. No one sits immediately. “Be seated.” They comply. No adjustment. No hesitation. The table is cold. Metal. Integrated systems already active. Recording. 🎬 Scene 11.3 — System Initiation A click. Then— a low hum. Whirling. Continuous. "FL values obtained." “Debriefing begins.” No introduction. No names. Only function. 🎬 Scene 11.4 — Event Start “Confirm entry point.” Wu Ming: “Radiation forest perimeter.” ... “DIST baseline zero.” ... ... A voice from the speaker bellows. “Confirmed.” No acknowledgment beyond that. 🎬 Scene 11.5 — Measurement Drift Voice: “Describe first anomaly.” Oksana: “DIST inconsistency.” ... “Non-linear fluctuation.” Her wrist twitches slightly. Remembering. “Values did not align across established understandings.” Silence. Then— Voice: “Logged.” 🎬 Scene 11.6 — Environmental Response Voice: “Field behavior.” Wu Ming: “Reactive.” ... “Not passive.” ... ... Voice: “Clarify.” Oksana: “Responds to movement.” ... “And intent.” ... ... ... A longer pause this time. Not rejection. Processing. 🎬 Scene 11.7 — Core Discovery Voice: “Object classification.” Adrian leans slightly forward. “Anomaly core.” Wu Ming looks at Adrian. He frowns. Then looks back at the recording system ... Wu Ming: “Localized stabilization observed.” Oksana adds: “Field distortion reduced in proximity.” Wu Ming: “Temporary effect.” All eyes remain forward. No one looks at each other. 🎬 Scene 11.8 — Extraction Event Voice: “Action taken.” Wu Ming: “Extraction.” ... “Manual.” The hum deepens slightly. Or seems to. Voice: “Result.” Oksana: “FL spike.” ... “Immediate.” Her fingers tighten slightly. “Environmental shift.” ... "resulting in..." "Increased Flux exposure risk..." ... "beyond threshold" 🎬 Scene 11.9 — The Echo A pause. ... Longer. ... ... Then— Voice: “Describe hostile manifestation.” Silence. But brief. Wu Ming: “Entity.” ... “Non-fixed form.” "Mist-like, vapor, menacing" ... "and New" Oksana: “Targeted.” ... “Not random.” Adrian: “Factor?” Wu Ming: “The core.” said with a considerable amount of restraint. A pause. ... Longer than before. ... ... ... ... 🎬 Scene 11.10 — Collapse Voice: “Event conclusion.” Wu Ming: “Rift collapse.” ... “Immediate on exit with ACC.” Voice: “Cause.” Silence. No answer. Oksana: “Unknown.” Wu Ming: "Not established" 🎬 Scene 11.11 — Loss Accounting Voice: “Personnel status.” No one speaks immediately. Then— Wu Ming: “Four unaccounted.” ... “Last seen inside anomaly.” Oksana: “No recovery.” Silence. Then— Voice: “Status updated.” ... Voice: “MIA?” Misha and Wu Ming showing a considerable amount of vexation No emphasis. No change in tone. 🎬 Scene 11.12 — System Friction Oksana’s brow tightens. Slight. “Not lost.” ... ... “They’re still in the field.” Silence. ... Longer this time. ... ... ... ... Then— “Unconfirmed.” Flat. Final. 🎬 Scene 11.13 — ACC Reclassification Voice: “Recovered object status.” A screen flickers. Yellow segmented text. UNSTABLE Wu Ming: “Behavior inconsistent.” Adrian’s eyes shift slightly. Focused. “Clarify.” Wu Ming stares at Adrian: “Post-extraction—” ... “—no stabilization effect.” Oksana: “That’s not consistent with prior cores.” Another pause... Longer... ... ... “Heavy monitoring required.” ... “Restricted classification pending.” Misha and Wu Ming: "Agreed". 🎬 Scene 11.14 — Interpretation Divide Voice: “Conclusion.” Wu Ming: “Core removal destabilized system.” Oksana: “It was anchoring the field.” Silence. Then— Voice: “Correlation noted.” ... Silence envelops the room. The machines go silent. No humming. No whirling. Then suddenly, the recording system comes back to life. Voice: “Causation unconfirmed.” That lands. Harder than it should. Wu Ming and Oksana looks at each other, Frustrated. 🎬 Scene 11.15 — Closure Voice: “Debrief complete.” No follow-up. No summary. No reassurance. Voice: “Stand by.” They don’t move. Then— Voice: “You two are cleared.” "Misha, Hanae, report to Logistics for logistics run status" "Adrian, report to vehicle bay for maintenance" 🎬 Scene 11.16 — Exit The door opens. Same as before. Just enough. No one speaks. They stand. One by one. Exit. 🎬 Scene 11.17 — End State Outside— the corridor feels different. Not safer. Just— quieter. Oksana checks her wrist. FL — stable Still elevated Wu Ming doesn’t look back. No one does. Because inside — nothing ended. THE DIRECTORATE The Directorate is not a government in the traditional sense — it does not rule nations or people. Instead, it exists to control exposure to the unknown. In a world shaped by anomaly zones, the Directorate determines who is allowed to enter these spaces, generate rifts, and what can be taken from them; and how that information is recorded and used. It oversees every operation through strict, centralized systems, prioritizing stability over understanding and control over explanation. To those who operate within its reach, the Directorate is not a guiding authority but a rigid structure — one that processes events without emotion and treats every mission, every loss, and every discovery as data. It does not claim to understand the unknown. It ensures that its consequences are contained. It does not govern people, territories, or ideology. It governs exposure . Formed in response to the emergence of anomaly zones, the Directorate exists to control access to what cannot be understood. It does not claim knowledge of the rifts, nor does it attempt to explain them. Instead, it builds systems around them. Who enters. What is taken. What is recorded. What is allowed to return. Everything else is irrelevant. The Directorate operates through strict, centralized control. Every mission, every reading, every failure is absorbed into its system. It does not react. It processes. To those within it, the Directorate does not feel like authority. It feels like structure . A system . A routine . The Directorate does not explore the unknown. It decides who is allowed to face it— and what is done with what comes back. Note: This is my attempt at making a long series. Beginning: Chapter 1: The Edge of Entry Links to previous and next chapter: Chapter 10: Return to Greyfield Chapter 12: (Coming Soon) Credits: Thanks to @panos for his Exclusion Zone. This is something to add to his and is a standalone spin.
