STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 12 ~
By EternaSky
📖 CHAPTER 12 — "WITHIN" 🎬 Scene 12.1 — Separation They exit. No one speaks. No instruction follows. The corridor splits. Misha turns first. Left. Hanae continues forward. Doesn’t look back. Adrian slows— just enough— then moves in a different direction. Wu Ming walks straight. Oksana stops. For half a second. Then— she turns. Opposite direction. 🎬 Scene 12.2 — Greyfield The facility continues. Unchanged. Voices reverb. Distant. Contained. A door closes somewhere. Metal against metal. Someone laughs— brief— cut off. Footsteps pass. No one stops them. No one acknowledges them. Oksana walks through normally. Without reacting. 🎬 Scene 12.3 — Wu Ming He reaches his door. Pauses. Not long. Just— enough to register location. Access. The door opens. He enters. Closes it behind him. The room is minimal. Bed. Storage. Integrated shower unit. Everything in place. Unmoved. He sets his gear down. Carefully. Same way he always does. He doesn’t sit. Not yet. 🎬 Scene 12.4 — Oksana She reaches her own door. Stops. Her hand hovers over the panel. She checks her wrist. FL Value — stable Status: Elevated She already knows. Still— she checks. Her hand lowers. But not to enter. She turns. 🎬 Scene 12.5 — Crossing The corridor again. Same distance. Same silence. She walks it without pause. Arrives. Wu Ming’s door. A single input. The lock disengages. 🎬 Scene 12.6 — Entry The door opens. Wu Ming turns. Only slightly. Enough to see. Oksana steps in. The door closes behind her. No greeting. No question. She begins removing her gear. 🎬 Scene 12.7 — Decontamination No words. Wu Ming follows. Clothing placed down. Controlled. Precise. She heads to the shower. He follows. The shower activates. Water hits metal first. Then— them. Harsh. Direct. They stand under it. Close. Not touching. ... Yet. Steam builds. But the shower room remains— industrial. Unchanged. Oksana pauses. Leans back. Hands behind her. Against the wall. Her breathing shifts. Not unstable. Just— different. Wu Ming stands resolute. Unfaltering. Present. She steps forward. Closes the distance. Her forehead rests against him. Brief. Still. Wu Ming doesn’t move at first. A fraction— of delay. Then— his hand settles at her back. Firm. Steady. She grips once. Tight. Then loosens. No sound. No words. The water continues. Running. 🎬 Scene 12.8 — Stillness They don’t separate immediately. No urgency. No resolution. Just— shared space. Breathing stabilizes. Gradually. The tension doesn’t disappear. It redistributes. Oksana with her forehead to Wu Ming's, "They're become drifters..." Wu Ming calmly: "Yes, the 4 of them" ... Oksana looks up at Wu Ming. "But we're still here, Ming." He comforts her. "Yes we are... Sana" "Yes... we are..." ... ... ... ... ... ... ... 🎬 Scene 12.9 — End State Nothing calls them. No system interrupts. No instruction follows. The world is just them now. The water continues to run. Uninterrupted. They remain where they are. Not fixed. Not recovered. Silently appreciating. Appreciated. Just — not alone. Life in Greyfield (I) 🏛️ Overview Greyfield is not a place people live — it is a system they pass through; a contained operational environment. Every aspect of the facility is designed around a continuous operational cycle: intake, stabilization, deployment, and return. Personnel are housed according to access level, fed for function rather than comfort, and moved through controlled spaces with limited freedom. Relationships form, but without permanence, shaped more by proximity and survival than intention. There are no civilians, no families, and no expectation of staying. Greyfield does not support life beyond necessity — it maintains people only long enough to send them back out. Everything within Greyfield exists to support that cycle. 🛏️ Living Conditions Accommodation is determined by access level. Lower-tier operatives share: - bunk rooms - communal storage - shared sanitation facilities Higher-access personnel are assigned: - private quarters - restricted access zones - integrated hygiene and decontamination units Privacy exists — but it is conditional. 🍽️ Sustenance & Recovery Food is functional. Prepared in bulk. Distributed in controlled intervals. Nutrition is prioritized over preference. Recovery spaces exist, but are limited: - seated areas - basic rest zones No area is designed for long-term occupation (typically). STALKERS come and go: lost in the field — MIA; met an untimely end — KIA; decided Greyfield is not worth their efforts and left the safe confines etc. 🚿 Hygiene & Decontamination Cleanliness is procedural. All personnel undergo: - radiation checks - flux exposure monitoring - mandatory decontamination cycles Facilities are industrial: - efficient - worn - heavily utilized Nothing is excessive. Nothing is wasted. 🧭 Movement & Access Movement within Greyfield is not unrestricted. Access is governed by: - clearance level - role designation - current operational status Certain areas remain permanently restricted: - deep research zones - flux processing sectors - Directorate-controlled environments Access is granted. It is never assumed available to all. 🧩 Social Reality Interaction between personnel is not regulated — but it is shaped by environment. Connections form: - through proximity - through shared exposure - through survival They are: - temporary - unstructured - rarely acknowledged formally Greyfield does not prevent human behavior. It simply does not support it (officially). The world is not ready to be repopulated. ⚠️ Core Condition There are no typical civilians within Greyfield. No families. No dependents. No permanence. Personnel arrive. They operate. They leave — if they can. Greyfield is not a place people belong to. It is a place they return to, if they wish, but they have to work for it. Note: This is my attempt at making a long series. Beginning: Chapter 1: The Edge of Entry Links to previous and next chapter: Chapter 11: Debrief Chapter 13: (Coming Soon) Credits: Thanks to @panos for his Exclusion Zone. This is something to add to his and is a standalone spin.
