STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 16 ~
By EternaSky
📖 CHAPTER 16 — “CONTROLLED VARIABLES” 🎬 Scene 16.1 — Settling They sit. No one speaks first. Trays settle against metal. Utensils shift. The room unperturbed. Across from them— Dr. Elias Varenko Dr. Amara Ilyanova Still. Composed. Nothing about the table demands attention. But it holds it. 🎬 Scene 16.2 — Acknowledgement Elias speaks first. “You returned with a unique core.” No emphasis. No evaluation. The statement sits. Wu Ming nods once. Nothing more. 🎬 Scene 16.3 — Flux Amara speaks without looking up. “Your readings didn’t rise because of the field.” A pause. Measured. “They rose because of how the field interpreted you.” Oksana’s hand stills slightly. Wu Ming: “It changed with movement.” Amara: “Yes.” Nothing added. 🎬 Scene 16.4 — Boundary Oksana’s voice is controlled. “The extraction—” Elias interrupts. Not sharply. “That event is under review.” No continuation. The boundary holds. 🎬 Scene 16.5 — Protocol Elias resumes. “Recovery protocol will change.” The room continues around them. Uninterrupted. “Cores do not leave the field before personnel.” ... “Unless extraction failure makes that impossible.” No one reacts immediately. 🎬 Scene 16.6 — Forward Elias continues. “You’ll be deployed again.” Not a question. “Next time, you will not be measuring the field.” A pause. “You will be working within it.” 🎬 Scene 16.7 — Tolerance Amara finally looks up. Her gaze rests— on Oksana. “Your tolerance is already above baseline.” A fraction longer later... “That makes you… useful.” Oksana doesn’t respond. But her wrist— rests closer to her. 🎬 Scene 16.8 — Closure Elias: “Finish your meal.” That’s it. The conversation ends. The room never stopped. 🎬 Scene 16.9 — Exit They stand. No words exchanged. Leona Kade remains seated. She waves them bye. She doesn’t follow. Wu Ming and Oksana leave together. The cafeteria continues its daily routine behind them. 🎬 Scene 16.10 — Corridor The noise fades. Footsteps replace it. Side by side. Oksana: “You’ll follow it?” Wu Ming: “Yes.” Nothing more. They reach the split. No pause. They separate. 🎬 Scene 16.11 — Wu Ming His room is unchanged. He sets his gear down. Carefully. Sits. Still. The field responds. Not to presence. To action. He doesn’t revisit the decision. He adjusts for the next one. 🎬 Scene 16.12 — Oksana Her room is quiet. She closes the door. Leans slightly— just for a moment. Then straightens. Her wrist. FL remains elevated. Not spiking. Not falling. Holding. She watches it. 🎬 Scene 16.13 — Reflection It didn’t return. Not to baseline. Not yet. She doesn’t reach for a syringe. Doesn’t adjust. Just watches. For the first time — she doesn’t expect it to fall. Operational Notice — Protocol Revision (Extract) Greyfield does not pause to explain change — it implements it. Following recent field activity, core recovery procedures have been revised across all active deployments. Extracted cores are now to remain within the rift environment until all assigned personnel have exited, unless operational failure makes this impossible. This adjustment reflects a shift in priority: personnel stability and continuity are now considered directly linked to containment success. Deviation from revised sequence has shown statistically relevant instability patterns. The reasoning is not shared. It does not need to be. In Greyfield, protocols are not debated — they are observed, updated, and followed. Note: This is my attempt at making a long series. Beginning: Chapter 1: The Edge of Entry Links to previous and next chapter: Chapter 15: Common Ground Chapter 17: (Coming Soon) Credits: Thanks to @panos for his Exclusion Zone. This is something to add to his and is a standalone spin.
