📖 CHAPTER 15 — "COMMON GROUND" 🎬 Scene 15.1 — Cafeteria They walk through the cafeteria without pause. The sound changes first. Not louder— just fuller. Voices. Movement. Metal against metal. People don’t stop. But they notice. Leona Kade leads without signaling it. She doesn’t look back. Wu Ming and Oksana follow closely. 🎬 Scene 15.2 — The Line Trays. Metal. Standard. Food is constantly moving. No delay. No menu. Leona grabs her usual. Wu Ming takes a set. Oksana follows. Someone ahead glances back. "Just in?" Wu Ming: "Yes." No follow-up. Another voice, further down: "Which sector? Zone?" Oksana doesn’t answer. She shifts her tray forward. The question dissolves. Not pushed. Not repeated. Left awkwardly unanswered. They leave them alone now. 🎬 Scene 15.3 — Movement They clear the line. Turn into the space. Tables fill the room. Clusters. Gaps. Patterns. Where you sit matters. Not assigned. But understood. Leona adjusts direction slightly. Not isolated. Not central. They sit. 🎬 Scene 15.4 — The Room Conversations continue. Around them. Not with them. “…rotation’s off again—” “…FL spiked before we even crossed—” “…you check your seals or what—” “…did you see those mutants—” “…still made it out though—” Nothing stops. Nothing shifts toward them. Greyfield doesn’t pause for anyone. Different stories. Same system. 🎬 Scene 15.5 — The Question It comes from the side. Not loud. Not careful. “You lose people?” No accusation. No softness. Wu Ming looks up. “Yes.” That’s all. The answer lands. Then moves on. 🎬 Scene 15.6 — Observation Oksana hasn’t eaten. Her wrist rests near the tray. Still. FL holding. Not baseline. Wu Ming notices. He reaches— lightly holds her hand. She relaxes. A small shift. A half-smile. Brief. Then she looks past him. People eating. Talking. Normal. Almost. 🎬 Scene 15.7 — Shift It doesn’t stop the room. It adjusts it. At a table across the space— Dr. Amara Ilyanova is already seated. Still. Composed. A tray in front of her. Untouched. Her attention is on her wrist display. Not the room. Then— someone takes the seat opposite. Dr. Elias Varenko No announcement. The change is subtle. But it spreads. Conversations continue— just slightly quieter. A few glances. Quick. Unheld. 🎬 Scene 15.8 — Selection A brief exchange between them. Too quiet to hear. Then— Elias looks up. Not searching. He already knows. His gaze settles— on Wu Ming. A pause. Measured. Then— a small motion. Two fingers. A slight tilt. Nothing more. Wu Ming sees it. No reaction. Then— he stands. Oksana watches. Says nothing. Then stands. Leona is already moving. No one stops them. But the room understands. 🎬 Scene 15.9 — Approach They cross the space. No rush. No hesitation. The distance closes. The table remains unchanged. They arrive. Amara looks up. Wu Ming. Leona. Then— Oksana. A fraction longer. Then she looks back down at her wrist display. 🎬 Scene 15.10 — Something... Elias doesn’t greet them immediately. He lets the moment settle. Then— “Sit.” Not command. Not invitation. Something in between. They do. No one else speaks. The room continues around them. Nothing has stopped. But something has shifted. Not in the room. In what comes next. Dr. Elias Varenko Dr. Elias Varenko serves as the Directorate’s central decision-making authority within Greyfield. His presence is measured and controlled, with a leadership style defined by precision rather than visibility. He does not overexplain, and rarely needs to — decisions pass through him with minimal friction, shaping operations without overt force. Elias operates with a clear understanding of long-term outcomes, often revealing only what is necessary at any given time. Within Greyfield, he is less a commanding voice and more a stabilizing constant — one that ensures the system continues to function, regardless of what lies beyond it. Dr. Amara Ilyanova Dr. Amara Ilyanova leads Greyfield’s scientific research into anomaly behavior and system response. Her approach is analytical, focused, and deeply observational — she studies not only the phenomena itself, but how individuals interact with it. Where others react, she measures; where others conclude, she refines. Amara’s role is not to direct operations, but to understand the underlying mechanics that govern them, often identifying patterns before they are formally recognized. Within Greyfield, she represents the interpretive layer of the system — translating unstable, shifting conditions into something that can be observed, tracked, and, eventually, understood. Note: This is my attempt at making a long series. Beginning: Chapter 1: The Edge of Entry Links to previous and next chapter: Chapter 14: Return Flow Chapter 16: (Coming Soon) Credits: Thanks to @panos for his Exclusion Zone. This is something to add to his and is a standalone spin.
