📖 CHAPTER 3 — “FIELD RESPONSE” 🎬 Scene 3.1 — The First Objective They weren’t sent in blind. Wu Ming finally gives direction. “Locate the source point.” Not the rift. Not the entry. Something deeper. Oksana frowns slightly. “Based on what?” Wu Ming raises his wrist. DIST fluctuating “It’s pulling toward something,” he says. Not a location. A bias . 🎬 Scene 3.2 — Movement Has Consequence They move. Slow. Controlled. Three steps forward— Oksana’s wrist vibrates sharply. FL 15.2 → 18.6 She freezes. “That’s too fast.” Wu Ming doesn’t stop. He adjusts his path. Two steps left instead. Her FL stabilizes. Not random. Directional. The field isn’t reacting to presence. It’s reacting to movement choice . 🎬 Scene 3.3 — Spatial Echo A sound. Footsteps. Behind them. They turn. Nothing. But the sound continues. Out of sync. Half a second delayed. Oksana’s breathing tightens. “That’s us,” she says. But it isn’t. Not exactly. Wu Ming speaks quietly: “Don’t match it.” 🎬 Scene 3.4 — The First Spike Without warning— All devices react. A synchronized vibration. Oksana looks down. FL 18.6 → 26.9 The gauge liquid jumps. Visibly higher. More active. Not gradual. Not environmental. Triggered. Everyone stops moving. Too late. The air feels— denser. Not pressure. Not heat. Presence. 🎬 Scene 3.5 — Controlled Retreat Wu Ming makes a decision instantly. “Backtrack. Same steps.” No one questions it. They retrace. Carefully. Step by step. Oksana watches her wrist. FL 26.9 → 23.4 Dropping. Slowly. The field relaxes. Not gone. Just… less interested. They stop. No one speaks for a while. Then Oksana says it. “It responds to intent.” Wu Ming doesn’t answer. But this time— he doesn’t disagree. RIFTS A Rift is not a naturally occurring tear in space. A Rift is a controlled spatial breach formed when a stable anomaly field is deliberately activated using the Rift Field Interface Unit . Unlike natural disturbances, rifts are engineered openings —temporary gateways that allow access into otherwise inaccessible anomaly zones. Rifts exhibit a distorted, unstable environment , often marked by faint energy interference and a distinct purple visual signature , indicating active flux interaction. They are not random phenomena , but precise outputs of flux regulation—opening only when properly calibrated and stabilised through field interaction. Accessing a rift is inherently dangerous, as it subjects individuals to flux exposure , measured through systems like the Flux Load. Prolonged interaction increases risk, making rifts both a gateway and a hazard. In essence, a rift is not an anomaly itself — but a bridge engineered from one , transforming latent instability into a navigable, high-risk pathway. Since discovery of the Rifts, many useful developments have been made from the materials uncovered in the Rifts. Note: This is my attempt at making a long series. Beginning: Chapter 1: The Edge of Entry Links to previous and next chapter: Chapter 2: Inside the Field Chapter 4: The Extraction Point (Coming Soon) Credits: Thanks to @panos for his Exclusion Zone. This is something to add to his and is a standalone spin.
