STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 2 ~
By EternaSky
📖 CHAPTER 2 — “INSIDE THE FIELD” 🎬 Scene 2.1 — The Other Side They step through— —and nothing changes. The forest is still there. Same trees. Same ground. Same silence. Oksana stops. That’s the first difference. She stops when she shouldn’t. Her wrist: DIST 021 T+ 00:06 FL 13.1 Too normal. Wu Ming looks around slowly. Not searching. Comparing. “We’re in,” someone says. But it doesn’t sound certain. Because everything looks the same. 🎬 Scene 2.2 — Measurement Drift The first inconsistency is small. It always is. Oksana checks her watch again. DIST 021 → 019 She doesn’t move. She tilts her wrist. Waits. DIST 019 → 022 No one says anything. Wu Ming raises his own. Different number. That’s new. “Cross-check,” he says. They compare. No two readings match. T+ continues. But DIST… is no longer reliable. 🎬 Scene 2.3 — The Forest Isn’t Fixed A branch snaps. Everyone turns. Nothing is there. But something was . The trees feel— closer. Not physically. But in how they occupy space. Oksana looks at a trunk she passed seconds ago. It’s not where she remembers it. Her FL ticks upward. FL 13.1 → 13.8 No trigger. No spike. Just… increase. She reaches for one of her syringes. Doesn’t use it. Yet. 🎬 Scene 2.4 — First Rule Break Wu Ming stops the team. Raises his hand. “Mark position.” A simple procedure. They drop a marker. Visual. Physical. Reliable. They move. Three steps. Turn back. The marker is gone. No disturbance. No sign it was ever there. Someone exhales too sharply. Wu Ming doesn’t react. But his voice changes. Slightly. “Stay within line of sight.” That wasn’t a rule before. Now it is. 🎬 Scene 2.5 — Flux Response Oksana’s wrist vibrates. She looks down. FL 13.8 → 15.2 Too fast. The liquid in her gauge shifts upward. More active now. She looks at Wu Ming. He already knows. “Not environmental,” she says. Which means: it’s reacting to them The rift isn’t just around them. It’s reading them. Personal Field Monitor (PFM-86) - (Current) (o.k.a the watch, casually) (author's note: A.I. just refuses to follow my watch, need more experimentation) A rugged wrist-mounted device known as a Personal Field Monitor (PFM-86), designed with a 1980s Soviet-era industrial aesthetic. The device has a thick, durable casing made of worn metal and reinforced polymer, with visible screws, seams, and protective edges. It is bulky and functional rather than sleek, secured tightly to the wrist with a heavy-duty strap. The display is a rectangular segmented digital screen with yellow text on a black background, resembling early Casio-style LCD displays. The interface is simple and utilitarian, showing three core readings: “DIST 000” (distance into anomaly field) “T+ 00:00” (time since entry) “FL XX.X” (Flux Load, persistent personal exposure value) The display is always active, built to be sturdy and can withstand all kinds of impact, no other glow effects beyond the natural yellow segmentation. Attached to the side of the device is a small transparent cylindrical gauge containing glowing yellow liquid. This liquid serves as a physical Flux indicator, remaining stable at low levels but rising and subtly agitating as Flux Load increases. The liquid emits a faint, contained glow and reacts dynamically to environmental conditions. The device shows signs of wear, including scratches, dirt, and slight discoloration, consistent with prolonged use in harsh radiation environments. It is practical, field-tested, and integrated into the STALKER gear. Older members of STALKER may be seen wearing older versions of the PFM-86 which tend to be bulky or worn on their upper arm / brachium.
