STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 8 ~
By EternaSky
📖 CHAPTER 8 — “HOLDING POINT” 🎬 Scene 8.1 — Impact Entry They don’t slow. Wu Ming breaks the tree line first. Oksana half a step behind. The clearing hits them— structure, light, geometry— wrong against the forest. Weapons snap toward them instantly. “CONTACT FRONT—” The call cuts short. Recognition replaces reaction. “—Friendly!” But no one lowers their weapon. 🎬 Scene 8.2 — Immediate Integration A figure steps forward— Misha. Rifle already shouldered. But not aimed at them. Aimed past. “Keep moving,” he says. Flatly stated. Controlled. Wu Ming doesn’t stop. He crosses into the perimeter fully. Oksana follows. The moment they’re inside— gunfire starts behind them. 🎬 Scene 8.3 — The Line Holds The mutants hit the tree line. Not in a wave. In fragments. Testing. Angles. Distances. Misha fires first. Short burst. Precise. One drops— then twitches— then stops. “Head and center mass,” he says. Not instruction. Confirmation. 🎬 Scene 8.4 — Controlled Space Hanae moves across the line. Not rushing. Not reacting. Positioning. She passes Oksana once— eyes flick down— wrist— breathing— eyes back up. “Flux elevated,” she says. Already moving again. “Don’t drift.” Oksana nods once. Still standing. Still holding. 🎬 Scene 8.5 — The ACC Wu Ming sets the ACC down— only briefly— against a crate. Doesn’t release it fully. Just stabilizes. Adrian is already watching. Not them. The case. “…That’s the source,” he says quietly. Wu Ming: “Yes.” Adrian steps closer— just enough to observe— not touch. “It’s pulling them.” Not a question. 🎬 Scene 8.6 — Pressure Returns The mutants adjust. They don’t push the line. They stretch it. One left. Two right. Another pulls back entirely— circling. Hanae sees it. “They’re mapping us.” Misha: “Let them.” Another burst. Another drop. No wasted movement. 🎬 Scene 8.7 — Internal Threshold Oksana finally checks. Her wrist flickers. FL — 40+ Unstable. She exhales slowly. Pulls the syringe. Hanae notices immediately. “Now,” she says. No hesitation. No delay. Oksana injects. Clean. Precise. Her body reacts— subtle— but controlled. The reading drops. Not safe. But stable enough. 🎬 Scene 8.8 — No Relief Silence doesn’t return. It shifts. Gunfire slows— but doesn’t stop. The mutants don’t retreat. They reposition. Always at the edge. Always watching. Misha reloads. Glances once at Wu Ming. “You brought attention.” Wu Ming: “Yes.” ... Misha nods. “Good. We needed confirmation.” 🎬 Scene 8.9 — The Zone Truth Oksana looks around properly now. This isn’t extraction. No lift platform. No transport. No signal tower. Just— ++ supplies ++ ++ cover ++ ++ people ++ Holding. Waiting. She says it quietly: “This isn’t evac.” Adrian answers: “No.” ... “It's a delay point.” 🎬 Scene 8.10 — Combined State They’re one unit now. Not introduced. Not briefed. Just— aligned. Wu Ming takes position near the ACC. Oksana stays within reach. Hanae controls spacing. Misha holds the line. Adrian watches the system. The mutants wait. Not leaving. 🎬 Scene 8.11 — End Beat The perimeter holds. Barely. Oksana checks her wrist again. FL — reduced… but not baseline. Still elevated. Still wrong. She looks at the ACC. Then at the tree line. “They’re not going anywhere.” Wu Ming: “No.” ... ... “Neither are we.” Mikhail “Misha” Korovin Role: Field Commander / Defensive Anchor Profile: A veteran operative with extensive frontline exposure, Mikhail Korovin functions as a stabilizing force in active combat environments. He prioritizes positional control, threat direction, and sustained defensive integrity over aggressive engagement. Demonstrates: - disciplined fire control - rapid threat assessment - minimal verbal command structure Operational tendency: Holds ground. Forces enemies to adapt to him. Hanae Saito Role: Field Control Specialist / Combat Systems Awareness Profile: Hanae Saito operates with high spatial and situational awareness, integrating battlefield observation with personnel condition monitoring. She bridges combat execution with human-system stability. Demonstrates: - real-time assessment of physiological stress (FL, fatigue, drift) - precise repositioning under pressure - controlled, low-emotion communication Operational tendency: Maintains order even in chaos — both in environment and in people. Adrian Volkov Role: Systems Analyst / Anomaly Oversight Profile: Adrian Volkov specializes in anomaly behavior interpretation and containment evaluation. He maintains focus on system variables over immediate combat dynamics, prioritizing understanding of threat origin and propagation. Demonstrates: - fixation on anomaly sources (e.g., ACC) - predictive reasoning based on incomplete data - emotional detachment from field conditions Operational tendency: Observes the system, not the fight. Note: This is my attempt at making a long series. Beginning: Chapter 1: The Edge of Entry Links to previous and next chapter: Chapter 7: No Safe Distance Chapter 9: (Coming Soon) Credits: Thanks to @panos for his Exclusion Zone. This is something to add to his and is a standalone spin.
