STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 13 ~

📖 CHAPTER 13 — "RECALIBRATION" 🎬 Scene 13.0 — Return The room is quiet. Water long since stopped. Only the low hum of the facility remains. She wakes first. Not abruptly. Just— aware. Wu Ming is still asleep. Flat on his back. Unmoving. Breathing steady. She watches him. Only for a moment. Then— she moves. Slow. Deliberate. No wasted motion. She reaches for her clothing. Dresses. Piece by piece. Gear follows. Set back into place. As it should be. He shifts. Not fully awake. But not unaware. As she turns to leave— his hand lifts. Finds hers. Not tight. Just— contact. She pauses. Looks down. Then gently— she places her other hand over his. A brief press. Warm. Certain. She slides free. Carefully. So as not to wake him fully. "...good night, Ming." The door opens. Closes. Wu Ming does not move again. 🎬 Scene 13.0.5 — Interval Greyfield cycles thru the night. Lights dim. Then rise. Time passes. Unmeasured. Doors open. Close. The world resumes. 🎬 Scene 13.1 — System Recall The notification arrives without sound. A light. On the wall panel. Outside both Oksana's and Wu Ming's rooms. Simultaneously. 🎬 Scene 13.2 — Wu Ming He is already awake. Not standing. Not resting. Just— present. Dressed. Ready. Seated on the edge of his bed. He looks at the panel. Does not rush. He moves. Gear is already set. He does not take all of it. Only what is required. He exits. 🎬 Scene 13.3 — Oksana She sees the alert. Understands immediately. No hesitation. She checks her wrist. FL — stable Lowered. But not baseline. Breathes firmly, Relaxes. She adjusts her sleeve. Covers it. Then moves. 🎬 Scene 13.4 — Corridor Convergence They step out. Separate doors. Same corridor. They meet halfway. No greeting. No pause. They align. And walk. 🎬 Scene 13.5 — Controlled Movement The facility is active. But quiet. Personnel move. Purposefully. No one stops them. No one acknowledges them. Doors open. Close. Behind them. Ahead. Everything is guided. Everyone is purposeful. 🎬 Scene 13.6 — Observation They pass a glass panel. Inside— movement. Figures. Equipment. Bright light. Contained. Oksana does not stop. But she sees enough. "...They brought it here now." Wu Ming does not look. "I know." 🎬 Scene 13.7 — The Door They arrive. The door is larger. Reinforced. Layered. No handle. Panel only. It opens before they reach it. 🎬 Scene 13.8 — Entry Inside— controlled space. Clean. But not sterile. Structured. At the center: A containment platform. Elevated. Secured. And on it— the ACC. Connected. Opened. Not fully. But enough. 🎬 Scene 13.9 — Separation of Ownership Oksana looks at it. Longer than she should. The casing is intact. But altered. Interfaces attached. Monitoring lines inserted. The core— dim. But active. Wu Ming steps forward slightly. Stops. Not by choice. By understanding. It is no longer theirs to worry about. 🎬 Scene 13.10 — Directorate Presence A voice. Not loud. Not amplified. Just— present. "Report." No introduction. No identity. Oksana answers first. Controlled. Precise. "Field extraction complete. Rift collapse occurred at threshold. Four personnel lost." No embellishment. No delay. 🎬 Scene 13.11 — Evaluation Silence. Then— "Flux exposure levels." Oksana: "Elevated. Stabilized post-extraction." A pause. "Correlation with object?" She glances at it. "...Confirmed." 🎬 Scene 13.12 — The Shift Wu Ming is addressed. "You maintained possession." Not praise. Not accusation. Statement. "Yes." Another pause. Then— "You will not again." 🎬 Scene 13.13 — Reassignment Signal A panel activates. New data. Minimal. Coordinates. Designation. Unfamiliar. "Preparation is to begin immediately." No question of acceptance. 🎬 Scene 13.14 — Exit The ACC remains. They do not approach it again. They turn. Leave. The door closes. Behind them. 🎬 Scene 13.15 — End Beat They walk back. Same corridor. Same silence. Oksana speaks. Quietly. "... They're studying it differently." Wu Ming: "Yes." ... "It's different this time." "The rift collapsed." "That never happened before." "This core is not the usual." "They will study it and then push it further." ... Oksana looks at Wu Ming quietly. She doesn't reply. Because they both know— they’ll be sent with it the next time they leave Greyfield. FLUX LOAD (FL) - I 🧪 Operational Metric Overview Flux Load (FL) is a continuous measurement of an individual’s interaction with the anomaly field. It is not a measure of radiation. It is not a measure of exposure time. It is a measure of response . 🧠 What FL Represents FL reflects how the anomaly field is affecting, and adapting to a specific individual. Two operatives in the same location may not share identical FL values. This variance is expected. ⚙️ Measurement System FL is displayed through the Personal Field Monitor (PFM-86): - Digital readout (segmented display) - Liquid gauge (visual reference) The liquid responds in real-time: - stable → low reactivity - agitation → active interaction - rapid rise → triggered response 📊 Operational Ranges FL does not operate on fixed safety thresholds. Instead, it is interpreted through behavioral ranges: FL 10–20 — Baseline Minimal anomaly interaction Stable physiological state Field presence acknowledged but not engaged FL 21–30 — Elevated Noticeable interaction with field Early-stage responsiveness No immediate instability FL 31–38 — High Load Active field response Increased unpredictability Requires monitoring and possible intervention FL 39–45 — Critical System stress condition Behavioral and environmental correlation increases Intervention required FL 46+ — Undefined No consistent data Observations incomplete Outcomes unconfirmed ⚠️ Key Behavior FL is not passive. It changes based on: - movement - intent - proximity to anomaly structures - interaction with anomaly cores In some cases, FL increases without environmental change. This indicates: the field is reacting to the individual, not the surroundings 💉 Stabilization FL can be temporarily reduced through controlled injection: - flux stabilizer (glowing yellow fluid in ampoules on medics) - administered via field syringe Effects: - short-term reduction - does not reset baseline - repeated use required under sustained exposure 🧩 Observational Note Reduction in FL does not indicate safety. It indicates: reduced interaction Which may not always be desirable. ⚠️ Directorate Classification FL is treated as: - an operational metric - not a medical condition Personnel are not withdrawn based on FL alone. They are observed. 🔒 The FL Condition FL does not measure danger. It measures involvement . Note: This is my attempt at making a long series. This is something to add to his and is a standalone spin.
