📖 CHAPTER 9 — “WINDOW” 🎬 Scene 9.1 — Still Holding The line holds. Not steady. Not strong. Just — — — holding. Misha fires in controlled bursts. Short. Measured. Hanae adjusts position without looking. Adrian watches the edges. Wu Ming does not move. The ACC stays tight against him. Movement detected at the tree line. Closing now. Not rushing. Simply repositioning. “They’re tightening,” Hanae says. 🎬 Scene 9.2 — The Hauler Oksana sees the Hauler in the distance. Just after the structure. Low. Reinforced. Floodlights cutting across uneven ground. Barely shining a light on the vehicle. The Hauler sits just beyond the perimeter. Already there. Seemingly ready to go. But too far and peppered with obstacles. “No clear path,” Adrian says. 🎬 Scene 9.3 — No One Moves No one breaks cover. The distance is short. But exposed. “They’re not pushing,” Misha mutters. “They’re closing.” The ACC hums. Low. Constant. 🎬 Scene 9.4 — The Realization Oksana checks her PFM. The yellow liquid trembles. “They’re tracking it.” Wu Ming doesn’t look down. 🎬 Scene 9.5 — Decision “We don’t wait,” Misha says. ... “We move on a window.” 🎬 Scene 9.6 — The Window A shift. Left flank. Small opening. “Now.” 🎬 Scene 9.7 — Break Hanae moves first. Out of cover. Direct. She reaches the Hauler— pulls herself up— mounts the turret. She fires. Controlled. Precise. She cuts angles into the mutants. Forces them to move how she wants them. 🎬 Scene 9.8 — Engine Adrian breaks next. Driver side. Door opens and he's in. Engine whirls. The Hauler tenses. 🎬 Scene 9.9 — Crossing “Go.” Wu Ming moves. ACC tightly held. Oksana follows. Close. A shadow breaks— Misha steps out— fires— holds— moves. 🎬 Scene 9.10 — The ACC Moment Adrian reaches out— “Give it—” Wu Ming stops him. “No.” ... “You drive.” Adrian pivots back. No argument. 🎬 Scene 9.11 — Boarding Rear opens. Metal. Oksana climbs in. Wu Ming follows. Still holding the ACC. Misha last. Still firing. Then he's in. Door seals. 🎬 Scene 9.12 — Movement No delay. The Hauler moves. Adrian floors it. Hard. Uneven terrain. Inside— Bumps and... Silence. 🎬 Scene 9.13 — Suppression Hanae remains on turret. Firing controlled bursts occasionally. Side ports open— Shots made— Ports close. Repeats boringly. 🎬 Scene 9.14 — The Edge The forest pulls away. Or they do. The mutants stop. At the boundary. Watching. They didn’t escape. They were allowed to leave. 🚛 DTV-12 “HAULER” — FIELD TRANSPORT UNIT A converted industrial cargo transport used by the Directorate for: - personnel and logistics transport - anomaly-adjacent operations - containment-adjacent transport It is not purpose-built. It is adapted under necessity . Originally a normal cargo truck, it has since been frankensteined into the somewhat reliable carrier transport it is now. The Directorate has a number of these vehicles to conduct their rift incursions and do logistic supply runs. 🛡️ DEFENSIVE SYSTEMS 🔻 1. Topside Manual Turret roof-mounted manually operated (no automation) protected by partial metal shielding Weapon Style: grounded ballistic / flux-assisted hybrid visible feed system or energy conduit 🔻 2. Side Firing Ports narrow armored slits along cargo compartment sliding reinforced covers Allows: firing FR-86 “VECTOR” rifles from inside 🔻 3. Rear Floodlight Suppression high-intensity rear-mounted lights Function: expose pursuing threats disorient movement in darkness ⚠️ LIMITATIONS not fully armored not airtight-perfect not comfortable not safe It increases survival odds. It does not guarantee them. Note: This is my attempt at making a long series. Beginning: Chapter 1: The Edge of Entry Links to previous and next chapter: Chapter 8: Holding Point Chapter 10: (Coming Soon) Credits: Thanks to @panos for his Exclusion Zone. This is something to add to his and is a standalone spin.
