STALKER: The Rift Protocol - Flux Load (a web novel) ~ Chapter 5 ~
By EternaSky
📖 CHAPTER 5 — “THE LINGERING SIGNAL” 🎬 SCENE 5.1 — Exit Sequence Begins Oksana stepped out first. The moment her boot crossed the threshold— the environment changed. The air stabilized. Her FL reading steadied: 31 She turned back immediately. “Wu Ming—now.” Inside the rift, he moved. Carefully. Deliberately. The anomaly core was still active in his grasp. A soft purple glow. Contained. Controlled. But the rift— was no longer stable. 🎬 SCENE 5.2 — The Echo Appears A shift. Not visible. Not immediate. But Wu Ming felt it. The air behind him tightened. The space reacted. Then— it formed. An Echo. Not random. Not chaotic. Targeted. Its movement was immediate. Direct. Wu Ming turned— just as it surged toward him. Not toward the group. Not toward the rift. Toward the core. 🎬 SCENE 5.3 — Break to Survive Wu Ming reacted instantly. He moved. Fast. Controlled. The Echo followed. Too fast. Behind him— voices cut out. signals flickered. Wu Ming pushed forward. He crossed. The threshold. The moment his body passed through— the core crossed with him. 🎬 SCENE 5.4 — Collapse The rift reacted. Violently. The structure destabilized. Then— collapsed. Instantly. Signal loss. All devices went dead. Behind Wu Ming— everything vanished. No transmission. No presence. Only silence. Oksana staggered slightly. Her FL spiked: 31 → 36 Then dropped. 31 → 29 She looked back. There was nothing there. No rift. No team. 🎬 SCENE 5.5 — The Failed Reopen Wu Ming didn’t move. For a moment. He stood still. Processing. Then— he moved to the RFIU interface. Attempted override. No response. Again. Nothing. Again. Failure. The anomaly— was gone. The core in his hand dimmed. The system had closed. 🎬 SCENE 5.6 — Realization Silence. No team. No signal. No recovery. Only Wu Ming. And Oksana. He looked at the ground. Solemn. Then at the device. Then at the empty space where the rift had been. “…they’re gone.” Oksana didn’t respond. Because the readings already confirmed it. 4 MIA. 4 potential new Drifters to fight... In the background looms ominous danger... Rift Incursions Rift Incursions are controlled operations carried out within active anomaly zones to locate, stabilize, and extract anomaly cores while maintaining system balance through specialized procedures and equipment (RFIU). These missions are executed under strict protocols designed to manage unpredictable spatial distortions, fluctuating FL (Flux Load) readings, and the inherent instability of rift environments. A typical incursion involves a coordinated team entering an active rift under RFIU support, where they navigate hazardous terrain, monitor environmental changes, and perform precise core extraction. The rift is expected to remain open and stable throughout the operation, allowing for safe exit once the objective is complete. Continuous data collection is critical, as FL and DIST readings are used to assess anomaly behavior and determine risk classification. A successful Rift Incursion concludes with the safe extraction of the anomaly core , maintenance of rift stability , and the return of all team members with intact signal continuity and low FL permanence gain . Ideally, no anomalies escalate beyond controlled thresholds, and the environment remains predictable enough for post-mission analysis. Each team is typically composed of a leader , a medic , a scout , and several field operatives , forming a balanced unit capable of navigation, analysis, extraction, and defense within unstable conditions. While roles are clearly defined, all members are expected to adapt dynamically, as Rift Incursions rarely unfold exactly as planned. Note: This is my attempt at making a long series. This is something to add to his and is a standalone spin.
