Silhouette AI images

Subjects reduced to outline against a brighter background.

A silhouette is made by exposing for the background and letting the subject fall to black, so all information sits in the outline. That makes it entirely a shape problem: the subject must be recognisable from its contour alone, separated cleanly from the background, and free of overlapping forms that merge into an unreadable mass.

Silhouette AI images: common questions

How do I prompt for a clean silhouette?

Say the subject is fully black against a bright background and describe the pose as a shape. A profile with clear space between the arms and body reads; a three-quarter stance with arms crossed becomes a blob. Naming the pose in terms of gaps and outline is the whole technique.

What backgrounds work best?

Bright, simple and evenly toned — a sunset sky, a lit wall, fog, a window. Any background detail competes with the outline, which is the only content the image has. A gradient behind the subject also helps separate the head and shoulders from the surroundings.

How is a silhouette different from a low-key image?

A silhouette has no interior detail at all, while low-key keeps some shadow information. Asking for a partial silhouette or rim-lit silhouette gets the in-between version, where an edge of light defines the form without revealing the surface.
