Lesson from this one: on a character like this the mouth and the mug do more work than any style adjective. My first passes all came back with a sad downturned mouth where the reference has fangs resting over a closed smirk, and the whole thing grey and gritty. So I wrote the smirk in as its own line, both fangs over the lower lip, heavy-lidded eyes, long pink nose, oversized pointed ears, and put a black mug in his hand with a white slogan and the number 400 on it. The rest was style: I dropped the splatter and hatching talk and moved the dusty rose-mauve ground and the crimson, aubergine, ivory and lamp-black palette up near the front, which is what got the pink flush back into the skin.
