Catwalk: walking in the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park (Ayres Rock), Australia on Thursday Thanks to @panos for the suggestion Wild rufous hare-wallabies (think tiny 12-inch rabbit-kangaroo combos) have gone extinct on mainland Australia in the 1990s. Some species in zoos and captivity survived tho. And also on a couple of islands. People are reintroducing rufous hare-wallabies to Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park (Ayres Rock) to create a wild population. A conservation fence around their environment hopefully keeps feral foxes and cats away. Their population has increased to 500. If you're lucky you might see them close to the fence at twilight. Wikipedia says : "For the Anangu, or Aboriginal people, the Mala or "hare wallaby people" are important ancestral beings. For tens of thousands of years, the Mala have watched over them from rocks and caves and walls, guiding them on their relationships with people, plants and animals, rules for living and caring for country. Mala Tjukurpa, the Mala Law, is central to their living culture and celebrated in story, song, dance and ceremony" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rufous_hare-wallaby#Significance_in_Anangu_(Aboriginal)_culture

About this image

Whimsical hyper-realistic digital artwork featuring an anthropomorphic white cat in hiking gear crouched on red outback soil, aiming a professional camera at small wallabies behind a chain link fence. Warm golden hour sunset light illuminates the scene, painting the sky bright orange and purple with iconic Uluru rising in the distant background. The cozy, playful adventurous mood leans into silly charming fantasy art set in the Australian desert.
