Moody AI images
Low light, muted palettes and weather doing most of the emotional work.

Moody is an atmosphere tag rather than a subject or a technique: low contrast in the highlights, heavy shadow, desaturated or cool colour, and usually weather or haze doing some of the work. It is what people reach for when they want an image to feel withheld rather than declarative, and it applies as readily to a landscape as to a portrait.

Moody AI images: common questions
How do I make an AI image feel moody?
Take things away. Lower the saturation, remove the fill light, put atmosphere between the camera and the subject, and keep the palette to two or three colours. Mood in images is usually an absence — of colour, of detail, of clear light — rather than something added on top.
What is the difference between moody and dark?
Dark describes exposure; moody describes feeling, and plenty of moody images are bright. An overcast beach in flat grey light with almost no contrast is moody without being dark at all. Saying low contrast or muted usually gets closer to the intent than saying dark.
Does moody work for portraits?
Well, and it is one of the more forgiving registers for AI faces — shadow and haze hide exactly the fine structure that models resolve badly. A face turned partly away, lit from one side with no fill, in a desaturated palette tends to succeed where a bright frontal portrait does not.
