Clover and the Courageous Peep Pt. 6
By Pocahontas
1. A New Beginning and Familiar Feathers The young calf stood in the center of the yard, his hooves shifting restlessly in the fresh straw. This new farm smelled different—the air was crisp, and the barn was larger—and a wave of homesickness washed over him as he thought of his old pasture. But as he looked to his side, his heart lifted. His best friend, a little duckling, was waddling nearby, quacking softly in encouragement. The farmer approached with a bucket of warm water and a brush, gently washing the dust from the calf’s coat. "There you go, little guy," the farmer murmured, scrubbing behind the calf's ears. "Let's get you cleaned up. I just hope the rest of the herd welcomes you with open arms today." 2. Into the Pasture Once the calf was clean and dry, the farmer led him and the duckling out to the main pasture where the rest of the cows were grazing. The farmer unlatched the gate, patted the calf's flank, and walked back toward the house. Left on his own, the calf felt a knot of nervousness in his stomach. The open field felt massive, and the other cows looked so big. Still, he swallowed his fear and took a few tentative steps forward, genuinely hoping to make some new friends. He didn't notice that far across the field, standing near the shade of an old oak tree, a massive bull had stopped chewing. The bull narrowed his eyes, staring intently at the newcomer. He did not like strangers on his turf. 3. The Unwelcoming Bull As the calf trotted a little closer to the herd, trying to look friendly, the bull suddenly let out a low, rumbling snort. Pawing at the green grass, the bull's irritation flared into anger. He marched forward, heavy hooves thudding against the earth, closing the distance between them in seconds. Before the calf could even moo in greeting, the bull lowered his head and gave the small calf a sharp, intimidating push. Terrified and completely overwhelmed, the calf didn't hesitate. He turned on his hooves and ran as fast as his legs could carry him, fleeing the pasture and sprinting all the way back to the safety of the stable. 4. Comfort in the Shadow of the Barn Inside the dark, quiet stable, the calf collapsed onto a pile of hay. Tears welled in his eyes, and he let out a sad, soft cry, feeling completely rejected and heartbroken by the bull's cruelty. Hearing his friend's distress, the little duckling fluttered up onto the hay bale beside him. The duckling nudged the calf’s wet nose, chirping softly and doing everything he could to make him feel better. The calf took a deep breath and looked at his small companion. Even though his first interaction with the other cows had been a disaster, he realized he wasn't entirely alone. He was truly happy to have his loyal friend by his side. 5. An Unexpected Search Party Meanwhile, on the other side of the farm, a frantic mother duck was waddling in circles. Her adopted son—the very duckling comforting the calf—had gone missing. Seeing her distress, the farm's dependable dog walked over and promised to help her track down her son. The barn cat was lounging nearby, completely uninterested in the drama. However, the dog gave her a look that made it clear she didn't have a choice but to tag along. As the trio set off across the property, the cat's initial grumpiness began to melt away. Walking side by side, sharing jokes, and navigating the tall grass together, the three animals began to truly bond. By the time they reached the edge of the woods, they were laughing and genuinely happy in each other's company. 6. Tales of the Past As they walked, the mother duck looked between her two furry companions, her curiosity getting the better of her. "I must ask," she said, pacing her webbed feet to match their strides, "how did you two meet? A dog and a cat being this close is quite rare." The dog smiled warmly, glancing down at the cat. "Well," the dog explained, "when I was just a tiny puppy, my original owners drove out here and abandoned me by the side of the road. I was scared and all alone. But then, this one found me," he nudged the cat gently. "She was just a kitten herself, but she refused to leave my side. We’ve been a team and looked out for each other ever since."
