Forest Echoes Part 2

Eleven years ago, a woman fled the castle walls, cradling a baby tightly in her arms. As she vanished into the night, word of her escape reached the throne room. Queen Luna looked down at the messenger, her eyes flashing. "Where is she?" Queen Luna demanded. "She is fleeing toward the forest, Your Majesty," the knight replied, bowing low. "Then what are you waiting for? Find her and bring her to me!" "My men are tracking her as we speak, my Queen," the knight assured her. Queen Luna leaned forward, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Whatever you do, not a single word of this goes to my son. Do you understand?" "Yes, my Queen," the knight replied, bowing before rushing to join the hunt. As the woman fled into the deep forest with the baby, the Queen's fury boiled over. The knight approached her, head bowed, and delivered the grim news: they had lost her trail. Glares of pure rage flashing in her eyes, the Queen barked her orders. "Have the men tear the village apart! Search every corner. And make it known—anyone caught helping her hide will face severe punishment." The soldier searched the entire village for the woman. The queen had offered a reward to anyone who could find her, and decreed that anyone helping her would be punished. 11 years later, a young girl sat by her window, gazing longingly at the world outside. A loyal servant stood quietly by her side, offering silent companionship. "What is wrong, Maria?" the servant asked gently. "I wish I could go outside," Maria sighed, her forehead leaning against window wall. "You know you cannot, my lady," the servant replied softly. "The Queen will not allow it." "But why?" "You know she only wishes to protect you." Maria nodded, trying to accept the answer, but deep down, her longing for freedom only grew. "I am sorry, Maria," the servant said, offering a comforting smile. Maria forced a small smile back. "It's okay." As the young girl sat in her room, the Queen sent a servant with an urgent message. The servant informed Maria that the Queen requested her presence immediately. Maria felt a knot of nervousness tighten in her stomach, knowing that an unexpected summons from the Queen rarely meant good news. Quietly, she followed the servant down the long corridors toward the throne room. When the heavy doors opened, she saw the Queen sitting rigidly upon the throne, her expression tense with anger. Maria approached slowly, keeping her head lowered to avoid eye contact. "Why are you falling so far behind?" the Queen demanded, her voice echoing in the hall. "We have provided you with the finest tutors in the kingdom, yet you still have not mastered the basics." Maria swallowed hard, staring at the floor. "I... I..." The Queen's gaze hardened, cutting through the silence of the room. "You will never be Queen if you cannot measure up," she sneered, leaning forward. "But if it is not your fault, it is your mother's... no, that is not important. The only reason you are still here is because of your father and your birthright. But if he were to have another child, I would give them the right to rule! You are an embarrassment!" The Queen snapped her fingers, dismissing Maria with a sharp wave of her hand. "Do better!" she barked. "I don't have time for this. I will speak to your father about this myself. Get out of my sight!" Tears pricking her eyes, Maria turned and ran from the throne room as fast as her legs could carry her, desperate to hide away from the Queen's harsh words. Maria ran to her room and started crying. The door opened, and a woman with white hair and violet eyes walked in. The woman looked down at the young girl. Princess Sofia: I hear the Queen spoke to you, and it didn't go well? Maria sniffled. "I... I am trying... I don't know why it's so hard..." "I see," Sofia said softly. "You are a smart girl, and the Queen just wants the best for you. In the end, you are the heir." "I know," Maria replied, looking up. "But I feel like I'm never enough." Sofia remained quiet for a moment. "I want to be good," Maria whispered. "Then study harder, work harder," Sofia encouraged. "Great Queens weren't made in a day." Maria looked at her and nodded in agreement. Sofia looked down and sighed gently. "Look, you will be a great Queen one day. You just have to trust yourself." Maria smiled faintly. "Thank you... Mother." "The Queen's expectations will only grow heavier, Maria," Sofia said, her voice dropping to a soft, almost hypnotic whisper. "Tomorrow, it will be more history. Next week, statecraft. Year after year, until you forget what it feels like to just... breathe." She turned around, her violet eyes holding a look of profound, tragic pity. "I often think about the stories of the old rulers. The ones who simply vanished before their coronations. The history books always call it a tragedy, a failure of duty." Sofia let out a quiet, bitter laugh, shaking her head. "But sometimes I wonder if they were actually the wisest ones of all. To choose freedom over a golden cage? It takes a very specific kind of bravery to realize you don't have to play a game just because you were born on the board." She walked back toward the bed, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from Maria's forehead. Her touch was warm, but her eyes remained cold, fixed on the young girl's face. "But that is just fantasy. You are a good girl, Maria. You will stay, and you will let the crown crush you, just like it did your father." Sofia smiled, a gentle, maternal expression that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Sleep well, my dear. The guards change their watch at midnight, and the courtyard gets so terribly loud when they do. Try not to let the noise keep you awake." After speaking with Sofia, Maria couldn't quiet her racing thoughts. What if she actually left? What would it be like to shed the crown, step away from her royal duties, and just live a normal life? The longing to see the world beyond the gates grew too strong to ignore. Driven by a sudden, fierce desire for freedom, she made up her mind: she was going to escape the castle walls and finally see the outside world for herself.
