I ran the same devotional composition through five models to see how each handled the gold-ground look. Watch the haloes and the punched borders, that is where the differences show up fastest. Some versions keep the gilding flat and crisp, others let it melt into the backdrop. The flesh modelling varies too, Duccio's green-earth shadows come through stronger in some than others. it is very cool how they all handle the gold. I like the subtlety of #1 & 4 but the others are good too. #2 is cool too, something about it makes the gold background look handcrafted.
