Psamanthe in her latest summer beach wear in aqua and sea-foam white. Psamathe, (pronounced SAM-uh-thee) is the Greek goddess and Nymph of sandy beaches personifing the coastal shoreline and the white seafoam on the sand. She is one of the Nereids. While her nature is protective, when Peleus killed her son Phocus out of jealousy (Peleus was Phocus's half-brother through their father who preferred his fully divine son), she sent a giant vengeance wolf to hunt him down. The wolf started chomping down on Peleus's massive lifestock herds. Understandably terrified that the wolf would eventually finish off the herds and go after him, Peleus ran to the temple and offered sacrifice after sacrifice to appease her but she was having none of it. Finally in desperation, Peleus turned to Thetis, the most powerful among the Nereid and his fiancee. Because there was a prophecy that Thetis' son would be more powerful than the father, the gods would not marry her out of fear so they chose Peleus for her. Thetis talked her sister down by pointing out bring dishonor to Thetis herself and the divine wedding the gods were planning to have her bridegroom-to-be killed by her sister. Thetis was especially powerful and had saved Zeus and a couple of the other major gods so she was seen as the leader among the Nereids. With reluctance Psamanthe chose to honor her sister's status over her desire for revenge. The giant wolf was turned into solid stone, right on the coast where it was hunting among the mangled carcasses of the herd. Not a nice statue. A ferocious snarling with jaws wide open. King Peleus's wealth was dependent on the coastal pastures and livestock, he was forced to view the enormous statue daily even from his palace, a constant reminder of his guilt. FYI, I was first going to do the Teleri Elves, the shore elves from Tolkien so there's some overlap in the Teleri elf and the Greek Nereid vibes.
