I wanted a dusk village, moody with a touch of surrealism, Pacheco's glazed murk sitting over Gorey's thin nib line, so I ran the same description wide. The first and fifth sink into brown-black with a dull orange sun; the second comes back pale grey and the fourth turns deep blue. The third is the odd one out, blotchy ink-wash stains and ragged paper edges, closer to a stained etching than a clean drawing. Faces split too, long and mournful up front, plainly realistic further along.
