The Tarot Major Arcana Pt 1
By JustAsh
The Tarot Deck is divided into three primary components. There is the Major Arcana consisting of 22 cards that generally indicate major events in your life or when used by themselves give a more generalized view of life. Then there are the Court Cards which generally indicate people in your life. They are divided into 4 suites and each suite consists of a King, Queen, Knight and Page. Finally there is the Minor Arcana, consisting of four suites of cards numbered Ace through 10. The four suites are Cups, Pentacles, Wands (or Staves) and Swords. These cards generally represent day to day events and possibilities in your life. What follows is part 1 of a Tarot project I'm working on that I've labeled the Sapphic Cosmic Tarot. I've included images representing the first 6 cards of the Major Arcana here. I will be doing subsequent blogs on the rest of the Major Arcana. As I mentioned above, the Major Arcana represents major events in your life. In fact they represent the journey through life, beginning with card 0 The Fool and ending with card 22 The World. The Fool 0 Look at her: barefoot, unafraid, stepping right to the edge of that floating island, no fear, no hesitation, that halo of light around her head, her gown swirling with the entire nebula. And that little star-dog, glowing with stardust, right there next to her, exactly where he's always been. The constellations swirling all around her, the whole universe opening up right at her feet. She's not a silly, naive wanderer about to make a mistake — she's a being who knows exactly what she's doing, who is about to step off the edge of the known world into magic. The meaning of The Fool that most people miss. It's not stupidity. It's faith. It's trust. It's the willingness to step forward into the unknown, no map, no plan, just you and the small loyal friend at your side, and the whole universe waiting. Most people interpret it as recklessness, as not paying attention. But it's the first card of the Major Arcana. It's zero. It's the start of the entire journey. All possibility, all potential, no rules, no pre-conceived notions. You can go anywhere, be anything. The Magician 1 She brings that quiet, unshakable focus, that steady, unblinking gaze, holding the whole universe cupped between her palms like it's something gentle, something she controls completely. The classic Magician symbols all arranged perfectly around the ring of power: fire (the triangle), water (the spiral galaxy), earth (the pentagram), air (the infinity symbol). All four elements, all four suits, all of creation, orbiting her, answering to her. She is not performing magic. She is magic. The core of The Magician that almost no one gets right: this card isn't about trickery, it's about agency. It's about having all the tools, all the knowledge, all the power you could ever need, and choosing how to use it with intention. She isn't waving a wand. She is holding the universe between her hands. She is creating. The Magician is the artist card. It's the card of taking raw material and turning it into something that didn't exist before. The High Priestess 2 There is nothing ambiguous about her, not even a little bit. She is the core of the entire deck. She does not act, she simply is; the one with the unblinking, all-seeing gaze, her eyes glowing like starlight, sitting perfectly still between two iridescent crystal pillars, the veil draped over her head like she is one step removed from the rest of the universe. She doesn't need to move. She doesn't need to speak. She already knows every secret, every answer, every thing you haven't said out loud yet. All the classic High Priestess iconography is here: the pillars of duality, the veil between worlds, the cosmic throne carved with runes, the starfield nebula swirling behind her like it bows to her. She is not a mortal. She is the part of you that knows, the part that doesn't need proof, the quiet inner voice that always has the answer even when your conscious mind is screaming in doubt. She is unknowable. That is her entire being. She doesn't give you the answer on a platter. She hands you the veil and says you have to look for yourself. That quiet remoteness, that unshakable stillness — that is not a flaw. That is who she is. You can feel the weight of her. The silence. The sense that if you sat in front of her for an hour she wouldn't say a single word, and you'd still walk away knowing everything you needed to. She is ancient, quiet, all-knowing, and completely unassailable. The Empress 3 The cosmic mother. This is the being that existed before light, before stars, before anything was ever created, sitting quiet in the void, breathing galaxies into existence one by one. She isn't drawn. She isn't a character made of pixels. She is made of nebula. Her body is stardust. Her hair is the arms of the Milky Way. The galaxies are literally orbiting her outstretched hand like they were pulled into existence the second she lifted her fingers. That quiet, serene profile, no face, no expression, just that perfect stillness, like she's been sitting there for 13 billion years and will sit there for 13 billion more. This one is the only one that matters. All that talk of robes and crowns and thrones? This is the actual Empress. The one that doesn't need jewels. The one that is the universe. She isn't holding the world in her hand. She is the world. Stare at this for hours and you will still find new little details — the tiny pinprick stars scattered through her silhouette, the way the nebulas curl around her legs like they're her dress, that quiet gentle curve of her outstretched palm like she's offering you a whole galaxy if you just reach out. The Emperor 4 This is the feminine Emperor. The one who holds the threads of the universe in both hands. The one who doesn't command from a throne — who weaves order out of stardust, who spins constellations into being, who builds worlds one thread at a time. She sits on a cube made of nebula. Her body is stitched through with stars. Sacred geometry burns soft and golden against her chest, her shoulders, her forehead. One hand holds the thread that connects every galaxy, every planet, every life. The other holds the north star. She doesn't rule. She sustains. She holds everything together. She redefines what authority even means. Authority isn't shouting. It isn't brute force. It's this quiet, unshakable, benevolent presence that sits at the center of everything, holding all the threads, making sure every single one of us gets to find our way home. Look at her face. No scowl, no grand posturing, no demand for obedience. Her eyes are closed. She is calm. She is steady. She knows exactly where every thread goes. She has all the time in the universe. Nothing is out of place. Nothing is unplanned. The Hierophant 5 The Hierophant is just inherently slippery. She's the one that's all about structure, tradition, the rules no one can quite put into words, the veil between what we know and what we're told to believe — that ambiguity isn't a flaw, that's the whole point of her. She doesn't hit the same sharp, visceral punch that The Magician or High Priestess or The World do. She doesn't demand your eye the way they do. The Hierophant as a woman completely breaks the stale old mold of the rigid male authority figure, turns that whole concept on its head. It's no longer about institutional dogma and rules. It's about inner wisdom, the quiet voice you trust more than any book or priest.
