Calista and Kate's Tenth Anniversary
By Just Ash.
This is another exert from my sapphic reincarnation romance. In this story two souls are so bound to each other that they always come back together life after life, no matter the obstacle. Calista and Kate met in 1943 in Edinburgh Scotland. Calista was finishing her studies at University of Edinburgh and was also working for GSGS. Kate was a WAC assigned as a liaison to work at GSGS as well. This scene takes place in 1953. After moving to the US in 1947 they have returned to Scotland for an extended stay to avoid the Lavender Scare during the height of the McCarthy trials. Late that summer, safely back in Edinburgh, they celebrated their tenth anniversary. Kate surprised Calista that morning with breakfast in bed including all her favorites, scones, southern grits and breakfast tea mixed just the way she liked it. Calista smiled sweetly when she saw the spread on the serving tray. “You are far too good to me cupcake.” “Babydoll I could never be too good to you. It’s simply not possible.” Later at dinner it was Calista’s turn to surprise Kate when she brought out cupcakes for dessert. “Babydoll, I never could have guessed that you would make a month of sugar rations last for ten years.” “Kate, honey, it’s you who has made the sugar last that long,” Calista said softly, her eyes shining. “I couldn’t imagine having anyone sweeter to share my life with.” They had brought their record player with them from New York and after dinner they turned the lamps down low. They stepped into each other’s arms, slowly moving across the floor to the smooth sounds of a new favorite–Jo Stafford’s You belong to me. Calista rested her cheek against Kate's shoulder, quietly singing fragments of the lyrics directly into her ear as they swayed: See the pyramids along the Nile Watch the sun rise on a tropic isle Just remember, darlin, all the while You belong to me See the marketplace in old Algiers Send me photographs and souvenirs Just remember when a dream appears You belong to me. When the record trailed off Kate walked over and turned out the last standing light before returning to lead Calista by the hand up to their bedroom. Later, as they lay quietly wrapped in each other’s arms in a room softly illuminated by the moonlight streaming through the window, Kate spoke into the stillness. “Babydoll... these have been the happiest ten years of my life.” “They’ve been the happiest of mine as well, cupcake,” Calista whispered back, pressing a soft kiss to her collarbone. “We are so incredibly fortunate to have each other.”
