The Coven Cat
By crabmouse
To live as a calico cat nestled within a deep-wood cottage coven is to lead a life of unrivaled fortune. You possess not just one, but several devoted cat-mothers eager to dote on your every whim. If one witch is too deeply engrossed in her brewing or spellwork, there is always another close at hand ready to offer an indulgent scratch behind the ears or a savory snack. Add to that the crackling warmth of the hearth, the crisp, herbal scent of lavender clinging to velvet hat brims, and an endless rotation of unusual magics humming through the floorboards, and your days are a tapestry of endless curiosities. Speaking of everyday curiosities, Fiona—with her bright blonde waves and sweeping black hat—was hard at work at the wooden table, rhythmically crushing a handful of freshly gathered blossoms inside a heavy stone thing. She was making the liquids again. For Calista, or Cali as the coven called her, the workbench was a landscape of high adventure. The various concoctions were a gamble: some smelled mouthwateringly delicious, while others carried a rancid, nose-wrinkling bite. But this particular glass vial caught Cali's interest immediately. It smelled utterly delightful, practically humming with an aroma as alluring as pure catnip. "That's not for kitties, Cali," Fiona said, glancing down with a soft smile. Cali didn't understand the human vocabulary, of course, but she knew the cadence. In feline translation, that cheerful tone clearly meant help yourself . "Cali, no!" Fiona gasped, her eyes going wide with alarm as a curious paw nudged the glass over the edge, sending a splash of shimmering liquid tumbling toward the floorboards. "Cali, no! What are you doing?" Fiona cried, though Cali already knew that particular tone very well. To feline logic, it simply translated to: drink up quickly while you can, and wonderful head scratches are imminent. Dropping gracefully to her knees amidst the sparkling shards and the shimmering puddle of spilled potion, Fiona scooped the mischievous calico up against her black lace gown. "Oh, you naughty little kitty! What are we going to do with you?" she sighed, her fingers instantly abandoning the scolding to lavish the promised affection right behind Cali's ears. Cali let out a soft, triumphant purr, her green eyes half-closing in bliss. Truly, being a coven cat was the ultimate life After a brief round of affectionate head scratches, Fiona turned temporarily tyrannical—perhaps a bit drunk on the sheer, intoxicating power of her brewing—and shut the door, leaving Cali locked out in the hallway. But a coven cat never lacks options. Cali simply trotted off to find Vera, the red-haired witch who was currently indulging in a rich, dark-berry pastry by the moonlit window. A smart kitty always knows when and where to deploy her finest theatrical tactics, especially when a witch is eating special treats. "Meow! Meow! Meow!" Cali wailed with tragic intensity. Feline Translation: Please, kind ma'am, I have not been fed in several weeks. I am a forgotten skeleton of a cat, wasting away before your very eyes. Have mercy. "Cali, I'm trying to eat," Vera murmured, pausing her fork mid-bite as she looked down. Meow. Meow. Meow. Vera let out a soft, defeated sigh. "Did Cynthia forget to feed you again? I guess it's not fair if I get a special treat while you have to wait. Hold on, Cali..." A moment later, a fresh, savory fish materialized on a fine porcelain plate. Truly, one can never doubt the master manipulation skills of a clever kitty. After all, a truly good kitty knows that survival requires more than just securing meals; sometimes, you need tactical air support. Since witches stand vastly taller than any feline, cooperation is essential. Here, Hazel stepped in to help Cali vanquish a horrid, uninvited winged invader that had fluttered straight into the pantry. Hoisted high into the air, the clever calico made quick work of the intruder. Never let anyone say Cali doesn't earn her keep! We make a good team, don't we? Cali thought with supreme feline satisfaction. Hazel, however, suddenly recoiled with a laugh as the moth vanished. "Ew, Cali! Did you just eat it?" Another wonderful thing about witches is that a touch of madness translates into exceptional fun—especially with Cynthia, the most wonderfully unhinged of the lot. "Well, what do we have here? A decadent morsel has wandered into our cottage? I shall gobble her up!" Cynthia declared, her eyes wide with theatrical glee as she dropped low to the floorboards. Of course, Cali didn't understand human vocabulary, but the wildly joyful cadence meant only one thing: playtime. Exceptionally rambunctious playtime. Cynthia lunged with dramatic, sweeping gestures, but she was never quite fast enough to outpace a nimble, darting calico. "Come back, my little morsel, so I may eat you!" Cynthia shrieked with laughter. Amidst the frantic skidding of paws on polished wood, the sudden crash of a distant vase, and the thoroughly exasperated yelling of an angry Fiona echoing from another room, Cali was having the absolute time of her life. Yet, above all the fascinating curiosities, the spontaneous midnight snacks, the tactical pantry hunts, and the wonderfully chaotic hallway chases, the true magic of the deep-wood cottage lived in the thick, unyielding current of affection that saturated every wooden beam. Gathered together on a rich, patterned rug before the roaring, crackling stone hearth, Fiona, Vera, Hazel, and Cynthia surrounded the center of their universe in a shared cocoon of devotion. Cali never had to harbor a single shred of doubt or worry about whether the witches loved her. She felt it in the tender weight of their fingers, the softness of their smiles, and the absolute safety of her hearth-warmed resting place. She knew she was cherished just as surely as she recognized the deep, unwavering bonds the women shared with one another. Under the soft, amber glow of towering candles and lantern light, framed by shelves of ancient books and blooming lavender, they were a wonderfully eccentric, tightly knit family—functioning precisely as they were always meant to be. And I think I covered all the basics. Perhaps I'm forgetting something, but I doubt it! Please come visit!
