Lumen: The Cat Made of Moonlight
By crabmouse
High above the shadowed, tangled floor of the ancient forest lies Turost, a sanctuary woven into the very heart of the towering canopy. Here, suspended in a golden sea of amber lanterns and evening light, the wood elves live a life untouched by the grim shadow of war. The ground far below is a treacherous maze of briars and beasts, a natural buffer against any would-be aggressor who would have to brave miles of dense timber only to face a relentless storm of enchanted arrows and warding magic. Because of this unassailable height, Turost is a society built entirely on peace, love, and the pursuit of noble endeavors. There are no armories echoing with the sound of sharpening steel, nor do scouts keep vigil for marching armies. Instead, the air fills with the quiet rustle of turning parchment, soft laughter drifting across suspended rope bridges, and the distant, soothing rush of waterfalls cascading through the roots and ferns far below. However, this story isn't about Turost. It is about Lumen, an adorable cat woven from pure, liquid moonlight who graces the world only once a month during the height of the full moon, lingering for a brief and magical three days. Whenever he manifests, the notoriously serene and tranquil elves abandon their quiet philosophy and scholarly pursuits, turning into a flutter of excited admirers vying desperately for his celestial attention and affection. Right before the eyes of Gwilwilith, Lumen had just materialized out of a cascade of shimmering stardust on one of the lantern-lit rope bridges. Though Gwilwilith was traditionally known across the enclave as a deeply somber and reserved druidârarely moved to excitementâshe was utterly overjoyed by the sudden apparition. Clutching her gnarled, glowing wooden staff in one hand, her face broke into a radiant smile as she leaned forward, extending her fingers to coax the glowing, ethereal feline closer for a stroke of affection. Whether Lumen chooses his place of materialization or if some hidden celestial science governs his arrival remains a mystery of the canopy. Scholars debate whether his landing points depend on the alignment of the constellations or the precise arc of the moon, but no one has ever found the answer. Perhaps he simply scans the sea of glowing tree-houses and appears wherever catches his ethereal fancy. One thing is certain: once he materializes, Lumen goes precisely where he pleases. On this particular night, a faint, rhythmic scratching echoed against ElenitsĂ«'s heavy wooden door. Startled by the unusual sound deep in the quiet hours, the red-haired elf pulled the door open, her expression shifting from confusion to absolute wonder. Without so much as a glance or an invitation, the glowing feline trotted right past her threshold. Realizing the magnitude of the honorâLumen was actually visiting her âElenitsĂ« was instantly overjoyed. She watched breathlessly as he padded directly to her bed and curled up in the velvet blankets, drifting into a peaceful slumber. Now, she rests her chin in her hands, fawning over the luminescent guest, utterly transfixed and far too terrified to make a sound lest she disturb him. Of course, Lumen is not one to stay in a single place for long. After his quiet nap, he wanders through the canopy and slips into the grand druidic temple, where rows of wood elves sit cross-legged in deep meditation. Wood elves possess an extraordinary, hypersensitive perception of the world around themâthey can track the faintest shift in temperature, feel the subtle current of an air-flow, and catch the microscopic rustle of a falling leaf. Yet, Lumen is woven entirely from pure, luminous moonlight, making him completely silent and nearly imperceptible when eyes are closed in meditation. So imagine her surprise when with a soft, weightless bound, he leaps directly into Tathar's lap. Startled out of her trance by the sudden, unexpected impact, Tathar nearly gasps aloud in fright. But as her eyes snap open and the ethereal, glowing form of Lumen curls into her lap, her initial shock melts into overwhelming joy. Basking in the celestial warmth and soft purr of the lunar feline, she gently cradles him, vowing to remain frozen in her spot long after the evening meditation has come to an end. Of course, besides being completely adorable, Lumen has a notorious reputation for causing trouble. Deep in the shadowed undergrowth, Feredis crouches in absolute silence, stalking a rowdy group of goblins who have dared to venture far too close to the borders of Turost. Just as she draws back her bowstring and prepares to make her move, a brilliantly glowing feline lets out a sharp, resonant meow directly beside her. Along with the sudden sound, the burst of brilliant moonlight shatters the shadows and alerts the entire goblin camp to her exact location. Feredis lets out a heavy, exasperated sigh, glaring down at the glowing creature as chaos erupts around them. Only the other night, she had spent hours making futile, pleading attempts to coax Lumen over for a single affectionate petâand now, of all times, the capricious spirit has finally decided he wants attention at the absolute worst possible moment. Despite all the mischief and trouble Lumen had caused over the years, there was one unforgettable night when the lunar cat truly saved the day. Deep within a hostile camp outside the canopy, LĂ»th sat trapped inside a heavy iron cage, swallowed by a crushing wave of despair. When the luminescent feline unexpectedly materialized beside her bars, a bittersweet smile touched her lips, though she harbored little hope that a creature of pure moonlight would understand her plight. Still, desperate times called for desperate measures. Lumen, I've been captured by slavers, please get help," she whispered into the cool night air. The cat merely let out a soft meow, clearly demanding attention rather than plotting a rescue. LĂ»th let out a defeated sigh. "Lumen, get help, please! Get NorhĂźl!" With a flick of his glowing tail, Lumen scampered off into the shadows as if he were merely setting off to hunt field mice. However, he darted straight through the tangled thickets until he found NorhĂźl near a crystalline fountain. At first, the warrior elf was simply glad to see the legendary creature, but Lumen began to meow incessantly, pacing and looking back toward the forest with an urgency that made NorhĂźl realize something was terribly wrong. The moment she started to move, the cat bolted, and NorhĂźl didn't hesitate to follow, calling out to her nearby band of warriors. When NorhĂźl burst into the slaver encampment at the head of a heavily armed rescue party, LĂ»th was utterly overjoyed. She had truly believed the cat was merely out hunting field mice, yet here he was, her unlikely savior. As the battle erupted around the campâwith elven arrows raining down and blades clashing against the startled captorsâLumen remained entirely unconcerned with the perilous danger unfolding around him. True to form, the celestial cat completely ignored the chaos of the skirmish, trotted straight into LĂ»th's cage, and curled up snugly in her lap to take a peaceful nap. It is also a common misconception that Lumen only appears in the dark of night, much like people mistakenly believe the same of the moon itself. In truth, whenever the moon is full in the daytime sky, Lumen is right there with it. Here, seated at an sun-drenched outdoor table during a lavish midday brunch, two wood elves dressed in their absolute finest revel in impossible luck. Lumen sits perched right upon the table, glowing with cool, celestial light while soaking up the adoration of the jubilant elves. Meanwhile, brushing affectionately against the table leg below is Heliosâa magnificent feline woven entirely from pure, radiant sunlight. While Helios walks the canopy every single day, he vanishes completely when night falls. To have both magical creatures present at once makes these two women perhaps the luckiest souls in all of Turost, getting to fawn over the dual embodiments of sun and moon side by side. Maernaur smiled softly, her fingers gently scratching Lumen beneath his luminous chin as he purred loudly. "My dear love," she murmured, glancing across the table toward her companion. "I wish so much we could bring these two home with us." SilpĂ©lĂłrĂ« stroked Heliosâs warm, sun-spun head as the golden feline leaned into her touch. She let out a contented sigh, watching the shimmering interplay of starlight and sunbeams dancing across the tablecloth. "We are the luckiest elves in this moment," SilpĂ©lĂłrĂ« replied, her eyes bright with affection. "We should live in the nowâand not try to keep these splendid creatures to ourselves. Imagine the heartbreak of caging the light!" Now, there are bound to be a few questions at this point, and the one we receive the most is quite simple: why does Lumen only manifest during a full moon, and why not during the day? As many scholars in the canopy are well aware, the moon does not produce its own lightâit merely reflects the sun. By all logical reasoning, sunlight should be more than capable of summoning the lunar cat. Some argue that perhaps there is simply too much competing glare from the sun during daytime hours, though we have already seen that Lumen is perfectly capable of being out during the day. Perhaps the light needs to be reflected across a vast cosmic distance? But even then, why strictly during a full moon phase? I am afraid these are deep cosmic mysteries that remain entirely unanswered. Perhaps a professor of lycanthropy might know more, but until then, the true nature of the moonlight cat remains wrapped in shadow. Another question many often ask is whether Lumen limits his visits exclusively to elvesâan outcome anyone would envy, given the desire to experience his presence. So far, it does seem that Lumen exhibits a clear preference for elves. Understandably so, as their calm, wise, and largely introverted nature makes them the ideal companions for a cat. Even so, there have been authenticated reports of Lumen gracing others with his company. In fact, the powerful wizard Luesâaffectionately or cautiously known by many as Mr. Cloudâreported quite a startle when he felt small, starry claws tugging on the hem of his billowing, star-stitched cloak. To his absolute surprise and overflowing joy, it was none other than Lumen, playfully batting and tangling himself in the folds of his mystical garment beneath the glow of the full moon. Another fascinating question that lingers among the scholars of Turost is what happens to Lumen when the moon isn't full. While several theories float through the canopy, the most captivating one suggests that he spends those dark nights journeying to distant planets to coincide with their full moons. Whispers from an unconfirmed sourceâthough no one can quite trace how the rumor beganâclaim that Lumen adores visiting a far-off, alien world bathed in the glow of massive ringed planets and luminous, bioluminescent flora. There, beneath towering purple mushrooms that pulse with light, he leaps and splashes through shallow cosmic streams, joyfully playing tag with adorable, antenna-sporting green alien cats. If only the wood elves had a way to communicate across the stars with their elusive visitor, imagine all the cosmic mysteries that would finally unfold! One thing remains entirely certain: the entire community of Turost holds a deep, abiding affection for Lumen, a uniquely lovable cat whose presence transforms the tranquil canopy into a realm of wonder. Should he ever grace you with his ethereal presence, you should consider yourself profoundly blessed, for his visits are as fleeting as they are magical Next, we will explore the intricate arts of persuasion and patience, breaking down precisely what techniques work to coax Lumen overâand which methods inevitably fail.
