Pippin: A cat's life on an Elven Ranch
By crabmouse
Life as an adorable farm cat on an elvish ranch is arguably one of the greatest outcomes a feline could ever hope for. The perks are plentiful: the elves are deeply affectionate, lavish you with constant attention, readily surrender their warmest sleeping spots, and reward your diligent pest control with mouth-watering delicacies. However, paradise has its drawbacks. Between managing the ranch chores, the elves are frequently too busy to cater to a kitty's every whim. Worse still, elvish magic is endlessly confusing. A sensible cat never quite knows how to react to the bizarre menagerie of magical creatures and peculiar phenomena scattered across the farm. Take the harvest, for instance. What is with all that crackling, pink, electric-like energy dancing from their fingertips? Surely, that cannot possibly be safe for a sensitive feline constitution. More importantly, apples are fundamentally meant to stay firmly attached to branches, not float haphazardly through the air in defiance of all physical laws. Sitting on the sunlit dirt and staring up in utter bewilderment, the Pippin can only wonder: why on earth can't these elves just pick their apples by hand like normal, grounded creatures? Or better yet? Just leave the apples in the tree! And beyond the confusing magical hazards, there are far worse problems to contend with. You would naturally think that, with so many elves populating the ranch, Pippin wouldn't have to go a single minute without a proper head scratch. Meow. Meow, meow, meow. Perched stubbornly on a nearby tree stump, Pippin raises his voice in high-pitched protest. Looking down from her perch on the wooden ladder, paint brush in hand, the elf lets out an annoyed sigh. "Pippin, please, I'm busy," she snaps, trying to focus on transforming the weathered red barn into a pristine white. Pippin, of course, does not care about the architecture. He keeps right on meowing, entirely unconvinced that painting barn walls should take precedence over feline adoration. Realizing there is simply no silencing him, the elf relents with an exhausted groan. "Fine, Pippin, but I need to get back to work!" Setting her paint can down on the ladder steps, she extends her fingers and casts a spell. A shimmering, ethereal blue hand materializes out of thin air, reaching down to expertly pet and scratch Pippin right behind the ears to his absolute, purring delight. As the ghostly fingers hit that exact sweet spot, Pippin closes his eyes in bliss. Alright, perhaps elvish magic isn't so terrible after all! And then, of course, there are the magical creatures. Pippin is strictly expected to annihilate the ranch's rodent population—it is his primary job description. Yet, he is expected to somehow know that these tiny, squishy moss creatures are off-limits and completely not to be harmed? How on earth is a feline professional supposed to tell who is an enemy and who is a friend when they both scurry around the floorboards? "Pippin, you be nice now!" Two watchful elven farmhands stand guard over the cluster of miniature folk, keeping a razor-sharp eye on the tabby to ensure he doesn't treat them like afternoon snack prey. Down in the thicket of green, one of the tiny moss creatures tilts its head upward and croaks, "Is it safe to pet him?" Looking at those wide, innocent eyes staring back up from the hay, Pippin decides that perhaps these little green neighbors should be kept safe. Still, the elves remained vigilant. The two elves certainly had a right to be suspicious. After all, just the other day, Pippin had enthusiastically chased down one of the local gnomes—in his defense, the fellow did look suspiciously rodent-like scuttling through the straw. Luckily, when you are an impossibly adorable kitty, misdeeds are forgiven in a heartbeat. Instead of coming to the rescue, three gnomish women stood nearby, clapping their hands and squealing with absolute delight. "Oh! He's so adorable! Look at him chasing Grandpa!" one cried, grinning ear to ear. "I want to pet him!" another cooed. "Just jump to safety, Gramps!" the third cheered, watching the frantic old gnome scramble for his life. He certainly wasn't going to eat the gnome—after all, he was exceptionally well-fed, and the regular elven food was quite delicious. But the truly elite treasures of the ranch were heavily guarded, like the rich, shimmering milk straight from the mystical runic cows. It was so buttery, so creamy—absolute feline heaven! Yet, the elves always guarded these liquid assets like a pair of greedy, overprotective dragons. Over time, Pippin had learned the ultimate art of tactical patience: he just needed to wait until the elves were thoroughly distracted to make his move. Once their attention was firmly elsewhere, he could sneak in and lap up as much liquid gold as his stomach could hold, enjoying every last drop until someone finally noticed. And then, of course, there were far more perilous problems: bandits raiding the ranch. For poor Pippin, this was the most frightening ordeal imaginable, filled with deafening noises, violent chaos, and structural destruction that forced the clever cat to tuck tail and hide safely away for the duration. Yet, as the old saying goes, every dark cloud has a silver lining. Once the chaos finally settled, Pippin found himself blessed with an abundance of unexpected lap time. After all, warm laps were universally acknowledged as the supreme places to sleep, and since the elves were usually far too busy working during the day, he rarely got the luxury. Bound tightly to their chairs by the ruffians, one of the captured elves cast a desperate glance down at the peacefully slumbering tabby and hissed, "Pippin, hurry, go get help!" The second elf, the blond, let out a heavy, exasperated sigh against her ropes. "Honestly... a proper farm dog would have run for help by now!" But yes, overall, life on the ranch was undeniably good—it had just about everything a little farm cat could possibly need. The elves were wonderful cat moms, even if they didn't cater to every single one of Pippin's endless whims and desires constantly.
