Gotta Dance! I love Singing in the Rain. Gotta Dance is a short number, a setup of a young man going to the big city to make it big as a dancer. You can see back then how close Hollywood musicals were still close to their Broadway roots with the sets for some of the scenes. However Co-director and star Gene Kelly designed the choreography specifically for the camera. Unlike dances staged for Broadway, Kelly used wide panning shots, tracking cameras, and rapid editing to create a sense of scale and momentum that could never be replicated live in a theater. So while there is a Broadway look in the sets, the dancing was very much meant for the camera. By then Hollywood had 20 years of musicals to look back on. Amazing to think we've gone from dancing in Singing in the Rain to dancing in music videos today. And you know what? I bet people still feel, "Gotta Dance!"
