  Thanks. To be blunt about it, after the op I learned they discovered I also had a dilated aorta. So got the valve and a piece of pipe (looks like something from my swimming pool filter system - really. Heart attacks are not always fatal, but that burst aorta - dead in seconds. And I only discovered this through coincidence. The possibilities averted played on my mind for a bit afterwards, kind of weird. But before I did my best to be matter-of-fact, even light-hearted. Figured that was the best mental state to be in. My wife had a far harder time emotionally which is understandable. Had an amazing aneasthetist - kept updating her thrughout the 8 hour op. As I say, blessed am I.

  I can relate. I haven't stopped drinking entirely, but moer than 20 years since I got it under control and became a responsible social drinker. Again, my drunk behaviour with family was just not who I wanted to be. Now since my heart op I am on chronic meds that enforce a three drink rule. So will enjoy a couple of glasses of red wine with a meal, or a quiet drink every now and then in the evening on a Friday or Saturday night, usally a whiskey or tequila sipped on the rocks.

  It was a challenging time from diagnosis to full recovery. Had a valve replacement, without which a heart attack was on the cards. While obviously serious, have to say the op itself and recovery after was not an painful experience. I'm a fortunate man. Guess some would say my work here is not yet done.

  Good choice, though I have stopped beer as the last couple of times I had just one I had a gout flare up. So mine was a reposado tequila on the rocks
