Tea with Alice and the Cheshire Cat Special Guest Star: William James (1842-1910), philosopher, psychologist William James was an American philosopher and psychologist, often called the “Father of American psychology.” He co‑founded pragmatism, shaped early psychology, and wrote some of the most influential works on religious and mystical experience. James believed that altered states of consciousness weren’t meaningless hallucinations but valid sources of insight. He experimented with nitrous oxide and argued that mystical states reveal aspects of reality that ordinary consciousness filters out. He was experimenting with induced altered consciousness almost 100 years before Timothy O'Leary. James coined the term "stream of consciousness."
