His HUD displayed a desperate warning: O2 CRITICAL – 02:41 – SYSTEM FAILURE. To his left, the only miracle left on the Red Planet pulsed with defiant life. The transgenic, bioluminescent flora of Sector 4—the genetically engineered ferns meant to sustain the colony—flared an intense, radioactive neon-green against the encroaching dark. They didn't need the sun; they thrived on the chaos, casting long, emerald shadows across the buckled floor plating. Nearby, the high-beams of an overturned automated rover cut through the swirling, ash-thick fog like searchlights, illuminating the catastrophic ruin of the greenhouse. Steve lunged forward, throwing his entire weight against the atmospheric pressure. His gloved hand, slick with frost and grime, gripped the frozen iron spokes of the manual override wheel. The metal screamed under the strain as he forced it to turn, desperate to seal the dome and trap the remaining oxygen before the green light finally went out.
