Sat: Gambia: "The Ninki Nanka" It is a legendary creature deeply embedded in the folklore of Gambia, particularly within the oral traditions of the Mandinka people. Described as a colossal, dragon-like serpent with the head of a crocodile and the crest of a rooster, it is said to inhabit the remote, murky swamps of the River Gambia. While it functions as a "boogeyman" used to keep children away from dangerous waters, it also holds significant spiritual weight; seeing the creature is traditionally believed to bring great misfortune or even death, reflecting the West African cultural theme of the boundary between the physical and supernatural worlds. The most popular tale involving the creature centers on a cunning crow who succeeds where humans and stronger animals fail. When the Ninki Nanka terrorizes a village, the crow uses its wit instead of force, carrying a large mirror (or a polished piece of metal) to the creature’s lair. When the dragon emerges to strike, it catches a glimpse of its own terrifying reflection; paralyzed by fear or driven mad by its own gaze, the Ninki Nanka retreats forever into the deep swamps. This is a very cool folktale. I enjoyed the read. The iamge is very cool too. I like the textile pattarns on the border as well as the dragon and crow. I was driving a country road in Japan and there was a stop sign and no traffic. Even though there was no traffic for a least a mile in either direction, I stopped and I knew the local people would too. It's a country road with little traffic. As I pulled through, I looked in my back mirror and saw crows fluttering down into the crossroads. I pulled to the side and looked back. They were pecking at some chestnuts. A crow flew in, dropping off a chestnut and joined his breathren in their feast. I realized they knew cars came through but infrequently. So they'd drop the chestnuts for hte cars to runover and crack open; and then everyone would fly in for the feast after a car actually drove by. I was surprised they were that smart. I enjoyed your smart crow and how he outwiteed a dragon creature
