Designed by Ettore Bugatti for Peugeot, it helped bring the automobile to a much wider audience HISTORY Peugeot Bébé Type BP1: the small car that wanted to beat the horse The Peugeot Bébé Type BP1 wasn't born to impress with its size, luxury, or power. It was born for something more challenging: to demonstrate that the automobile could cease being a luxury for the wealthy and begin to become an everyday tool. Presented at the 1912 Paris Motor Show and produced from 1913, the Bébé Type BP1 was the result of a unique collaboration between Peugeot and Ettore Bugatti. Bugatti, who already envisioned cars as precision instruments rather than mechanically driven carriages, designed a small, lightweight, and simple car. Peugeot took that idea and transformed it into an accessible option for the French public. Unlike the larger automobiles of the time, the Bébé didn't strive for grandeur. It was compact, open, a two-seater, and economical. Its 855cc inline four-cylinder engine delivered around 10 hp, enough to nimbly move a very lightweight vehicle, weighing between 330 and 350 kg. It wasn't a road beast. It was something else entirely: a small key to freedom. Its top speed hovered around 55–60 km/h, modest figures by today's standards, but quite respectable for such a small vehicle before the First World War. The 3-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, and leaf spring suspension kept it within the technical norms of its time, but its scale was its revolution. The Bébé proved that you didn't need to build a monster to build the future. Peugeot sold it as a practical, economical, and easy-to-maintain car. The idea was brutally clear: it could cost less to maintain a Bébé than to maintain a horse. And there, in that almost domestic comparison, its true historical value emerges. The enemy to be defeated wasn't another car. It was the world that came before. Between 1913 and 1916, around 3,000 units were manufactured. It wasn't a gigantic number compared to the Ford Model T, that army on wheels, but it was enough to establish the Bébé as one of the most important early Peugeots. Christie's cites 3,065 units built, and L’Aventure Peugeot defines it as a remarkable success in the democratization of the automobile. It also had sporting flair. In 1913, the little Peugeot gained fame with performances in events like the Coupe Internationale des Cyclecars and the Mont Ventoux climb. Not bad for a car called "Bebé." The mechanical irony seemed to come from the factory. The Peugeot Bébé Type BP1 holds a special place because it encapsulates a crucial transition: from the automobile as an elegant oddity to the automobile as a real possibility. It wasn't big, it wasn't luxurious, it wasn't fierce. But it was clever. And sometimes that's enough to change history. HISTORY Dodge Brothers Model 30: the car that turned a surname into a brand The Dodge Brothers Model 30 wasn't simply Dodge's first car. It was a declaration of independence. Before manufacturing complete automobiles, John and Horace Dodge were already central figures in American industry. They had built parts, engines, transmissions, and components for other manufacturers, especially Ford. For years, they were the men behind other people's machines: precise, indispensable, and quiet. The kind of role that often gets relegated to the small print, because history also has terrible editorial design. But in 1913, they decided to found the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company and take the definitive leap: to stop manufacturing parts for others and build their own car. In November 1914, the first production Dodge rolled off the assembly line at the Detroit/Hamtramck plant. The model was known as the Model 30-35, although over time it became simply known as the Model 30. Its arrival was significant because it didn't try to compete with the Ford Model T by copying it. Dodge chose a different path. The Model 30 was more expensive, more robust, and more refined. Where Ford focused on maximum simplicity and the lowest possible price, Dodge offered a car with more power, better finish, and advanced technical solutions for a mass-produced vehicle. The 3.5-liter, 4-cylinder inline engine, producing around 35 horsepower, provided a solid response for its time. It wasn't a sports car, nor did it pretend to be. It was a car designed for work, travel, and handling imperfect roads, which in 1914 were essentially the norm, not the exception. The 3-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, and sturdy frame made it a reliable machine, more concerned with durability than appearances. One of its most important features was the all-steel body manufactured by Budd. In an era when many cars still used wooden frames under metal panels, the Dodge offered a more modern and robust construction. This detail was significant: it spoke of a brand that wanted to be born with a reputation for toughness, not with empty promises. It also incorporated a 12-volt electrical system, electric start, and electric lighting. Today it sounds ordinary, almost boring. In 1914, it was a sign of modernity. Less cranking, more convenience. Small advances that were beginning to transform the automobile from a noisy and demanding contraption into an everyday companion. The impact was immediate. In 1914, only 370 units were built, but by 1915, production had climbed to around 45,000. Dodge quickly became a respected brand, strategically positioned in the market: not as cheap as Ford, but more robust, better equipped, and more prestigious. The buyer wasn't just paying for a car. They were paying for trust. The Model 30 also gained a reputation beyond civilian use. Its derivatives and Dodge-branded vehicles were used by U.S. forces during World War I, reinforcing the image of durability that would accompany the brand for decades. That reputation for being "dependable" wasn't born from empty advertising slogans: it was born from robust, reliable vehicles. In short, the Dodge Brothers Model 30 was the car that transformed two component manufacturers into major players. John and Horace Dodge didn't enter the automotive world asking for permission. They entered with a sturdy, serious, powerful, and well-built car. It wasn't the cheapest. It wasn't the most famous. It wasn't the most revolutionary in appearance. But it was the car that said: Dodge no longer manufactures for others. Dodge exists. And from that moment on, the name stopped being behind the machine. HISTORY Cadillac Type 51 V8: The car that taught the world to think in eight cylinders When the Cadillac Type 51 appeared in 1915, the automobile had already ceased to be a novelty. Ford had demonstrated that it could become a product for the masses. Now another question remained: what should the car of the future be like for those seeking more than just transportation? Cadillac answered with eight cylinders. It wasn't the first time a V8 engine had been installed in a car. Some European and American manufacturers had already experimented with this configuration during the early years of the 20th century. However, those engines were expensive, complex, and produced in very limited quantities. The true achievement of the Type 51 was different: it transformed the V8 into an industrial product. Introduced in late 1914 as a 1915 model, the Cadillac Type 51 incorporated a modern 5.1-liter V8 engine that developed approximately 70 horsepower. The figure was impressive, but even more impressive was the smoothness with which it delivered that power. While many four-cylinder cars vibrated and demanded constant effort from the driver, the Cadillac moved with a serenity unheard of at the time. That smoothness transformed the driving experience. The Type 51 didn't need to demonstrate its superiority by making noise. It did so with refinement. Its engine ran with less effort, delivered better flexibility, and allowed for maintaining high speeds over long distances without conveying the feeling of pushing the engine to its limits. Cadillac didn't neglect the rest of the package either. The chassis was solid, the three-speed manual transmission was designed to handle the V8's greater torque, and the Delco electrical system, a successor to the innovations the brand had already introduced years earlier with the electric starter, reinforced the image of a technologically advanced car. The Type 51 was offered in numerous body styles, from elegant open-top Touring models to refined limousines intended for businessmen, doctors, industrialists, and political figures. Cadillac understood that luxury consisted not only of fine materials but also of providing a quiet, reliable, and comfortable ride. Its success was immediate. The V8 engine proved to be extraordinarily robust, and soon other American brands began developing their own eight-cylinder engines. Over the following decades, the V8 would become the heart of countless Cadillacs, Oldsmobiles, Buicks, Lincolns, Chryslers, Fords, and Chevrolets, transforming into one of the great symbols of American engineering. Viewed from today's perspective, the Type 51 represents much more than an elegant car. It represents the moment when luxury ceased to be measured solely by the size of a car and began to be measured by the quality of its engineering. If the Ford Model T showed that the automobile could belong to everyone, the Cadillac Type 51 showed that it could also be extraordinarily refined. It was the first large, mass-produced V8. And with it began a mechanical tradition that, more than a century later, continues to inspire awe at the mere mention of two characters capable of encapsulating an entire philosophy: V8. It represented IKA's transition from utility vehicles to private and representative automobiles. HISTORY When Industrias Kaiser Argentina (IKA) inaugurated its Santa Isabel plant in Córdoba in 1955, the goal was ambitious: to build a true national automotive industry. Until then, the country assembled some imported vehicles, but manufacturing a passenger car from start to finish was a huge challenge. After the initial success of the Estanciera and the Jeep, IKA decided to take a much bigger step: to produce a large car aimed at businesspeople, professionals, government agencies, and families seeking comfort and prestige. Thus, the Kaiser Carabela was born, officially presented on July 25, 1958. It wasn't a completely new design. Its origins lay in the 1954 American Kaiser Manhattan, one of the most elegant sedans of the postwar era. However, the model was extensively adapted to the Argentine reality, where highways, rural roads, and daily maintenance demanded much more robust solutions than those required in the United States. The Carabela was the first passenger car mass-produced by IKA and one of the largest vehicles ever manufactured in the history of the Argentine automotive industry. At almost 5.5 meters long, with a robust body and enormous chrome surfaces, it commanded respect from any angle. Its design reflected the North American aesthetic of the mid-1950s: • wraparound fenders, • enormous chrome bumpers, • a wide front grille, • smooth and elegant lines, • and an interior designed for traveling for hours in absolute comfort. While Europe was focusing on small and economical cars, the Carabela represented the exact opposite philosophy: space, comfort, and presence. Thanks to its size and elegance, the Carabela quickly began to be used as an official vehicle. It was chosen by ministries, provincial governments, state-owned companies, and various public agencies. It was also highly valued by doctors, businesspeople, and professionals who needed to travel long distances in comfort. Its enormous passenger compartment, spacious seats, and smooth suspension made it one of the most comfortable cars available in Argentina in the late 1950s. Its long chassis was used to build: • official limousines, • presidential vehicles, • hearses, • floral carriages, • protocol vehicles, • and even versions intended for taxi service. At the beginning of the 1960s, the global market began to change. American cars became smaller, and new, more modern and efficient European models appeared. IKA also began a new era with vehicles like the Bergantín, the Renault Dauphine, the Rambler, and later the Torino, which would eventually become the great symbol of the Argentine automotive industry. Production of the Carabela ended between 1961 and 1962, according to historical records, closing a cycle that had lasted only four years but left a profound mark. Today, the Kaiser Carabela is one of the most admired pieces of Argentine automotive heritage. For many collectors, it's more than just a classic car. It's the automobile that proved Argentina could build a great luxury sedan with its own identity and pave the way for a true national automotive industry. Because when the heat of a V12 threatens to cook the engine bay, gold apparently ceases to be jewelry and becomes engineering. The obsession with building the perfect car. In the early 1990s, the world of supercars was dominated by legendary names like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Jaguar. However, a small British company, primarily focused on Formula 1, had an idea that seemed impossible: to build the best road car ever created. That company was McLaren Cars, and the man behind the project was South African engineer Gordon Murray, considered one of the most brilliant designers in automotive history. His goal was never to build the most powerful or the most eye-catching car. He wanted to create the perfect car. Light, precise, fast, reliable, and designed exclusively for the driver. In an industry accustomed to adding weight with more luxury, more electronics, and more power, Murray decided to do the exact opposite. Because the greatest revolutions often begin when someone looks at the owner's manual and concludes that it's better suited as a cup holder. An Uncompromising Project Development began in 1988. Murray wrote a list of all the principles that the future McLaren F1 had to adhere to. Among them were ideas that seem commonplace today, but at the time were revolutionary: the lowest possible weight; an instantly responsive naturally aspirated engine; a manual transmission; no electronic driver aids; excellent visibility; efficient aerodynamics without enormous wings; sufficient comfort for long journeys; build quality comparable to that of a luxury car. The philosophy was simple: If something made the car heavier without actually improving the driving experience, it simply shouldn't exist. BMW Enters the Scene McLaren needed an extraordinary engine. Initially, they consulted Honda, McLaren's Formula 1 partner, but the response was unsuccessful. Finally, they turned to BMW Motorsport, where the legendary engineer Paul Rosche accepted the challenge. The result was one of the most admired engines of all time: A completely new, naturally aspirated 6.1-liter V12. It produced: 627 hp 650 Nm of torque It didn't use turbochargers. It didn't need forced induction. It all stemmed from immediate response and extraordinary mechanical flexibility. Even today, many engineers consider the BMW S70/2 one of the best engines ever built for a production car. The First Carbon Fiber Supercar The McLaren F1 broke new ground once again by becoming the first production car with a monocoque made entirely of carbon fiber. Today, almost all hypercars use this material. In 1992, it was a solution practically reserved for Formula 1 cars. The weight savings were enormous, but it also allowed for an unprecedented level of structural rigidity. Even the engine bay was lined with 24-karat gold leaf. It wasn't an extravagant luxury. Gold reflects heat better than most available materials, helping to protect the carbon structure from the intense heat generated by the V12. One of those rare occasions where saying "it's lined with gold" describes an engineering solution and not the owner's ego. Edward and Albert In 1990, McLaren was secretly developing the F1 road car. Two prototypes from the kit car company Ultima, named Edward and Albert, were used. They were later destroyed. It was 1990, and the F1's carbon fiber chassis was still two years away from completion. But the car's engineers and designers urgently needed a platform to test the driving position, brakes, clutch, gearbox, and cooling system. It had to be lightweight, mid-engined, and capable of housing a powerful engine. A Ferrari Testarossa was briefly considered, but the head of the F1 road car program, Gordon Murray, dismissed it as too extravagant. And so Edward and Albert were born. They weren't the prettiest, poor things. But they have a story to tell. Because, hidden behind the rear grille, lies a naturally aspirated 6.1-liter V12 engine, created by BMW. That's right, this story delves into the history of the legendary McLaren F1. Three seats. A driver in the center. Perhaps the most famous feature of the McLaren F1 is its cockpit. While all other manufacturers were placing the driver to one side, Gordon Murray asked a very simple question: What is the best driving position in a car? The answer was obvious. In the center. Thus, a unique configuration was born: driver in the center; two passengers slightly set back on either side. This improved: weight distribution; visibility; the feeling of control; the connection between driver and car. More than thirty years later, it remains one of the most original solutions ever seen in a production vehicle. The Fastest Car on the Planet On March 31, 1998, driver Andy Wallace took a McLaren F1 to the Ehra-Lessien circuit in Germany. The recorded speed was: 386.4 km/h (225 mph) It was the fastest production car in the world. And it achieved it: without a turbocharger; without a dual-clutch transmission; without active aerodynamics; without stability control; without traction control. Just a naturally aspirated engine, a six-speed manual gearbox, and extraordinary engineering. The record stood for years, becoming an almost mythical benchmark. From the Street... to Le Mans The most surprising thing happened in 1995. McLaren decided to adapt the F1 to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It wasn't even a car originally designed for endurance racing. Even so, the McLaren F1 GTR won the overall classification in its first appearance. In addition to the overall first place, four other McLarens finished among the top finishers. Rarely has a road car demonstrated such superiority when going head-to-head with prototypes developed exclusively for racing. An Unrepeatable Legacy Between 1992 and 1998, only 106 units were manufactured, including all its variants. Some incorporate far more advanced technologies. However, few manage to convey the same feeling of mechanical purity as the McLaren F1. It wasn't designed to impress with numbers. It was designed to offer the most perfect driving experience possible. And perhaps that's why, more than three decades later, it still occupies an almost untouchable place among the most extraordinary cars ever built by humankind. Because perfection rarely appears. Historical and Cultural Significance Herbie transformed one of the most recognizable popular cars of the 20th century into a true cinematic character. Its visual identity was so powerful that a white Beetle with the number 53 and racing stripes is instantly recognizable even outside the context of the films. HISTORY Herbie first appeared in The Love Bug, a Walt Disney production based on Gordon Buford's novel Car, Boy, Girl. The film tells the story of Jim Douglas, a race car driver who becomes involved with a seemingly ordinary Volkswagen Beetle. But Herbie is no ordinary car. He has a will of his own. He can drive without a driver, express emotions, feel jealousy, get angry, and develop a strong bond with the people he considers his friends. And when it's time to race, the little Volkswagen is capable of taking on cars that, on paper, should leave him in the dust. His appearance contributed enormously to making him an icon: a white body, red and blue stripes, and the unforgettable number 53. The success of The Love Bug transformed Herbie into the star of a franchise that continued with films like Herbie Rides Again (1974), Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977), and Herbie Goes Bananas (1980). There was also a TV series, "Herbie: The Love Bugs" (1982) (a single season with five 48-minute episodes), and a television adaptation also called "The Love Bug" in 1997. The latest film (at least until now) was Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005). Throughout its various appearances, numerous Volkswagen Beetles were used, specially prepared for filming. Some were modified for autonomous driving scenes, stunts, races, or special effects. Therefore, there isn't just one physical Herbie: behind the character were several production cars, although they all shared the visual identity of the legendary No. 53. What made Herbie special wasn't his power or his actual speed. It was something much harder to achieve: personality. Disney managed to transform a car produced for millions of people into an individual and unique character. Herbie could be funny, proud, romantic, rebellious, and heroic. The Beetle ceased to be simply the protagonist's vehicle and became the protagonist. Decades after its debut, the number 53 remains inextricably linked to him. Herbie wasn't the fastest car in film history. Nor the most powerful.
