CRYPTIDS - Beings of popular belief (Part 1)
By Charly Palermo
Beings of popular belief, technically known as cryptids, are creatures whose existence is based on testimonies, folklore and sightings, but which have not been recognized by official science. We're going to show some of the best known ones 🌲 BIGFOOT — The Witness Who Doesn't Want to Be Seen Country/Region of Origin: Primarily the United States and Canada, especially the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, British Columbia). ⏳ Origin of the Belief Legends about similar creatures have existed for centuries in the traditions of the region's Indigenous peoples. But the modern Bigfoot myth gained traction starting in the 1950s, when documented giant footprints and more systematic accounts began to appear. The cultural turning point came in 1967 with the famous Patterson-Gimlin Film, which shows a figure walking in a forest. To this day, it remains a subject of debate. Bigfoot filming recreation 1967 🧬 Physical Description Height: between 2 and 3 meters Build: extremely robust, muscular Body covered in dark hair (brown, black, or reddish) Long arms, beyond human proportions Heavy stride, large footprints (hence the name) Face: a mix between human and primate, with a deep and unsettlingly aware gaze 🧠 Behavior and Lifestyle Bigfoot is described as a creature that is: Evasive and intelligent. Nocturnal or crepuscular. Solitary or in small family groups. Capable of deliberately avoiding human contact 🍽️ Diet It is believed to be omnivorous: Fruits, roots, berries. Small animals. Possibly fish Some accounts mention opportunistic behaviors, such as scavenging abandoned human camps. Bigfoot 🌲 Natural Habitat Dense, ancient, humid forests. Mountainous areas with difficult access. Regions with low human presence 👣 Sightings and Accounts From the mid-20th century to the present day, thousands of people claim to have had encounters. The pattern is repeated: Brief appearance. Absolute silence in the surroundings. Feeling of being watched before seeing it. Rapid disappearance, almost impossible to track In addition to the Patterson-Gimlin footage, there are: Footprints found in remote areas Recordings of guttural sounds or knocks on trees Testimonies from hikers, hunters, and park rangers It's never clear. It's never definitive. 🌫️ The Living Legend Bigfoot is not just a creature. It's a question that walks among the trees. What if there's something out there… that knows us better than we think? Bigfoot filming recreation 2025 Colorado 🦇 MOTHMAN — The One Who Appears First Country/Region of Origin: Primarily the United States, with its epicenter in Point Pleasant. ⏳ Origin of the Belief The phenomenon began in 1966, when several witnesses reported a strange creature near an abandoned industrial area known as the TNT Area. But what transformed the story into a legend was its connection to a tragic event: the collapse of the Silver Bridge. After more than a year of sightings… the bridge collapsed. From then on, Mothman ceased to be just a creature. It became an omen. Mothman recreation sighting Point Pleasant, 1966 🧬 Physical Description Height: between 6 and 8 feet tall (1.8 to 2.5 meters) Humanoid body, dark or grayish; initially, some described it as white. Enormous wings, similar to those of a bat or moth Bright, intense, hypnotic red eyes Poorly defined head, sometimes without clear features 🧠 Behavior and Lifestyle Brief appearances, almost always nocturnal. Perches on elevated structures (bridges, buildings, trees) Can fly… but also “glide” without flapping its wings Does not attack directly. Observes… and disappears Some witnesses claim to feel: Momentary paralysis. A sense of imminent threat. A kind of “external consciousness” observing them 🍽️ Feeding There is no clear evidence of physical feeding. This fuels theories: Doesn't it need to eat? Isn't it biological in the traditional sense? Does it feed on energy, fear… or events? 🌌 Natural Habitat It doesn't have a clear habitat like other cryptids. It is associated with: Abandoned industrial areas. Bridges. Areas near rivers. Places where “something is about to happen” It doesn't live in one place… it appears where it is needed (or feared). 👁️ Sightings and Accounts First major documented sighting: November 1966, two couples see a winged figure with red eyes following them as they drive. For over a year: Dozens of witnesses report similar encounters. Strange lights in the sky. Vivid and disturbing dreams. A collective sense of unease. Then the Silver Bridge collapses. After that… silence. 🔁 Reappearances Over the decades, sightings have been reported in various locations around the world before: Natural disasters. Accidents. Tragic events. Never confirmed. But the boss… persists. 🌫️ The living legend Mothman isn't a monster. He's a wordless warning. He doesn't come to attack. He comes to watch… and when you see him, it's already too late. 🌊 NESSIE — The Queen Beneath the Surface Country/Region of Origin: Scotland, specifically Loch Ness. ⏳ Origin of the Belief The first records date back to the 6th century, when the monk Saint Columba recounted an encounter with a creature in the River Ness. But the modern myth was born in 1933, when a sighting near the road that borders the loch captured public attention… and the world began to gaze into that dark mirror. Recreation of a Nessie sighting in the famous "Surgeon's Photograph" taken in 1934 🧬 Physical Description Long, serpentine body Elongated, elegant neck emerging from the water Small head in proportion to the body Fins or humps visible when moving Dark, grayish, or greenish skin, sometimes with a moist sheen 🧠 Behavior and Lifestyle Extremely elusive. Moves below the surface most of the time. Appears briefly, as if gauging how much it can reveal itself. Avoids human contact Many witnesses share a curious feeling: it doesn't seem to flee… it seems to choose not to stay. 🍽️ Diet It is believed to feed on: Lake fish. Eels. Possibly waterfowl Given the lake's limited ecosystem, this raises questions… which adds more mystery than answers. 🌊 Natural Habitat Loch Ness is deep, cold, and dark: Over 200 meters deep. Highly turbid water (very low visibility). Low temperatures year-round A place where what's there… isn't always visible. 👁️ Sightings and Records The most famous case is the so-called "Surgeon's Photo" from 1934, attributed to Robert Kenneth Wilson, which shows a silhouette with a neck emerging from the water. For decades: Photographs. Blurred footage. Sonar echoes. Testimonies from locals and tourists Some discredited. Others… simply inexplicable. 🌫️ The Living Legend Nessie isn't a threat. It's not even an enigma waiting to be solved. It's something more elegant than that. It's proof that some things... prefer to remain a mystery. 🏔️ YETI — Guardian of the Roof of the World Country/Region of Origin: The Himalayan region, especially Nepal and Tibet, in areas near Mount Everest. ⏳ Origin of the Belief Yeti stories have existed for centuries in local traditions. In Tibetan folklore, it is known as “Metoh-Kangmi,” which can be interpreted as “wild snow man.” Western interest grew in the 20th century, especially in the 1920s, when British explorers reported giant footprints in the snow during expeditions to the Himalayas. 🧬 Physical Description Height: between 2 and 3 meters Robust, powerful build. Body covered in white or light gray fur. Face more human than ape-like, with harsh features. Large, wide feet, adapted to snow 🧠 Behavior and Lifestyle Solitary creature. Extremely territorial. Active in hard-to-reach areas. Capable of moving easily across extreme terrain Some accounts describe it as: Protective of certain areas. Indifferent to humans… until its space is invaded It doesn't chase. But it doesn't retreat either. 🍽️ Diet It is believed to be omnivorous: High-altitude vegetation. Lichens, roots. Small animals Given the extreme conditions, its diet would be adaptable and opportunistic. ❄️ Natural Habitat High Himalayan Mountains. Glaciers, caves, permanently snow-covered areas. Places with extreme climates and low human presence A territory where survival is already a feat… and hiding, an art. 👣 Sightings and Records First modern reports: 1921: British expedition led by Charles Howard-Bury finds giant footprints in the snow Subsequent decades: Mountaineers report figures in the distance. Footprints impossible to attribute with certainty. Alleged hair samples analyzed without definitive conclusion In 1951, mountaineer Eric Shipton photographed footprints on the glacier, one of the most famous images of the phenomenon. 🌫️ The Living Legend The Yeti is not an elusive mystery. It is a boundary. Where humanity stops advancing… something else keeps walking. These are the first four on my list, and perhaps the most famous cryptids (debatable, of course). The list is extensive: Kraken, Skinwalker, Wendigo, Chupacabra, Nahuelito, Ogopogo, Kappa, Drop Bear, Storsjoodjviet, Yowie, Anguila peluda, and many more.
