Beings of popular belief, technically known as cryptids, are creatures whose existence is based on testimonies, folklore and sightings, but which have not been recognized by official science. We're going to show some of the best known ones, part 2 🩸 CHUPACABRAS — The Invisible Predator Country/Region of Origin: Modern origin in Puerto Rico, with stories spreading to Mexico, the United States, and much of Latin America. ⏳ Origin of the Belief The phenomenon emerged in 1995 in Canóvanas, when strange deaths of farm animals were reported. Goats, chickens, and sheep appeared: With no clear signs of struggle With localized wounds Supposedly “bloodless” The name originated there: “the one who sucks goats.” (El chupacabras) 🧬 Physical Description There isn't a single version, but the most common are: 🔹 Reptilian Version (original): Small or medium-sized body. Spines. Dark or grayish skin. Large, bright eyes. Hooked or bipedal posture 🔹 Canine Version (more recent): Similar to a wild dog or coyote. Hairless or with diseased skin. Intense eyes. Gaunt appearance Two forms… one unsettling aspect. 🧠 Behavior and Lifestyle Nocturnal. Stealthy. Attacks livestock in rural areas. Avoids direct contact with humans The accounts share a disturbing characteristic: It makes no noise. It leaves no clear traces. It appears… and disappears As if it doesn't need to escape. As if it already knows it can't be caught. 🍽️ Diet According to legend: It feeds on animal blood.. It attacks with surgical precision. However, much research suggests: Attacks by common predators. Sick animals (like coyotes with mange). But popular lore insists: This… is no ordinary animal. More modern version 🌵 Natural Habitat Rural areas. Isolated farms. Semi-arid or jungle regions It doesn't have a fixed territory. It appears where there is prey… and disappears before dawn. 👁️ Sightings and Accounts First major case: 1995, Puerto Rico: multiple reports of livestock found dead under strange circumstances Then: Wave of sightings in Mexico (late 1990s). Reports in the southern United States Cases in Argentina, Chile, and other countries Always the same pattern: Night. Silence. Animals found at dawn And a question that lingers… heavier than the body left behind. 🌫️ The Living Legend The Chupacabra is not majestic. It is not ancient like the Yeti nor elegant like Nessie. It is something else. Closer. More uncomfortable. It doesn't live in the unknown… it lives close by. Too close. 🌊 KRAKEN — What emerges when the ocean decides Country/Region of Origin: Maritime tradition of northern Scandinavia, especially Norway and Iceland. ⏳ Origin of the Belief The first descriptions appear in sailors' accounts between the 13th and 18th centuries. One of the first to document it was Bishop Erik Pontoppidan in the 18th century, describing it as a creature so large it could be mistaken for an island. In an era when the sea was uncharted territory… the Kraken was the perfect explanation for the inexplicable. 🧬 Physical Description Colossal marine creature. Similar to a giant octopus or squid. Enormous tentacles with powerful suckers. Massive body, rarely seen in its entirety Damp, dark surface, sometimes with shimmering reflections It is never seen whole. It is glimpsed in parts… and that is enough. 🧠 Behavior and Lifestyle Inhabits the deep ocean. Remains hidden most of the time. Only emerges occasionally. Associated with attacks on ships Ancient accounts say that it: Can create whirlpools when submerged. Confuses sailors by mimicking land Does not hunt out of necessity. Sometimes… it seems to react. 🍽️ Diet It is believed to feed on: Large fish. Whales. Anything that gets caught within its reach In some stories, even: Entire ships 🌊 Natural Habitat Deep North Atlantic Oceans. Abyssal, dark, unexplored zones A world where light doesn't reach… and what lives there doesn't need to be seen. ⚓ Sightings and Accounts For centuries: Sailors reported tentacles emerging from the water. Stories of ships being dragged or destroyed. Tales of giant masses moving beneath the surface Over time, some myths may have been inspired by encounters with: Real giant squid. But the Kraken… was always bigger than that. 🌫️ The Living Legend The Kraken isn't just a creature. It's an idea. That there's something down there… so big… that it will never need to rise completely. 🐉 NAHUELITO — The Secret of the Patagonian Lake Country/Region of Origin: Argentina, in the Patagonia region, especially Lake Nahuel Huapi. ⏳ Origin of the Belief Long before modern records, indigenous peoples of the region already spoke of creatures in the depths of the lake. The name “Nahuelito” emerged in the 20th century, but its roots are older, linked to Mapuche tales about mysterious aquatic beings. Modern interest grew in the 1920s, when accounts from settlers and explorers began to appear, describing strange movements in the water. In 1960, the Argentine Navy pursued an unidentified underwater object in the lake for 18 days, without success. 🧬 Physical Description Since there are no complete sighting records, and only ripples are observed, there are two hypotheses: Older: Similar to Nessie, that is, a body resembling a plesiosaur. More recent: Long, serpentine body. Extended, flexible neck. Small head in proportion. Several humps visible when moving. Dark skin with greenish or grayish tones Some accounts describe it as having an elegance almost… too perfect to be casual. 🧠 Behavior and Lifestyle Extremely elusive. Moves mainly underwater. Appears briefly on the surface. Avoids human contact Witnesses tend to agree on one thing: there is no violence, no direct threat… just a presence that shouldn't be there. 🍽️ Diet It is believed to feed on: Fish from the lake. Small aquatic species The lake's limited ecosystem raises questions about how such a creature could survive… and that only adds to the mystery. More modern representation according to "sightings" 🌊 Natural Habitat Lake Nahuel Huapi: Deep, cold, and with crystal-clear waters. Surrounded by forests, mountains, and snow. Deep, largely unexplored areas A beautiful place… and vast enough to hold secrets. 👁️ Sightings and Accounts 1920s: First modern reports of strange movements in the water Over time: Witnesses describe “elongated shapes” moving. Ruffles that don't correspond to the wind. Shadows visible beneath the surface In some cases: Unclear photographs and videos. Accounts from fishermen and local residents Never conclusive. Always persistent. 🌫️ The Living Legend Nahuelito doesn't appear. He doesn't frighten. He's there. Like a story the lake decided to keep… but not entirely. 🌿 ORANG PENDEK — The little one who observes Country/Region of Origin: Indonesia, especially the island of Sumatra, in areas like Kerinci Seblat National Park. ⏳ Origin of the Belief Unlike other cryptids, the Orang Pendek is not a product of modern sensationalism. It has been known for centuries by local communities, who describe it as a real creature of the forest. Scientific interest grew in the 20th century, when explorers and naturalists began to take the accounts seriously… because something didn't quite fit with any known species. 🧬 Physical Description Height: between 1 and 1.5 meters Compact, muscular body. Strong arms, similar in proportion to humans but more primitive. Short, dark or brown fur. Flat face, with features somewhere between human and ape. Upright posture (walks on two legs) It's not gigantic. And that's what's unsettling. Because it could be nearby… without being seen. 🧠 Behavior and Lifestyle Extremely elusive. Intelligent, possibly more so than expected. Moves in absolute silence. Actively avoids human contact Some accounts say: It observes from the vegetation. It stops… and disappears without a sound It seems to assess the human before retreating It doesn't inspire immediate fear. It inspires… doubt. 🍽️ Diet Probably omnivorous: Fruits. Roots. Insects. Small animals Its behavior suggests complete adaptation to the jungle environment. 🌳 Natural Habitat Dense rainforests. Mountainous terrain with difficult access. Humid regions with thick vegetation An environment where seeing isn't enough… you have to know how to look. 👁️ Sightings and Accounts Unlike other cryptids: Many accounts come from local inhabitants. Some researchers also claim to have seen it briefly. 20th and 21st Centuries: Testimonies consisting of descriptions. Footprints found, difficult to classify. Fleeting encounters, always under similar conditions. Never clear. Never entirely false. 🌫️ The Living Legend The Orang Pendek doesn't want to be a myth. It's the closest thing to thinking… that there's something out there that's also trying to understand us. With these, that makes eight on my list. The list of cryptids is extensive: Ogopogo, Storsjoodjviet, Yowie, Hairy Eel, Mapinguarí, Blue Tiger, and many more.
