My entry in the "End of the World" challenge. Didn't do quite as well as the last one--not even close, in fact. What, nobody like that 1970s classic by the Carpenters any more? 🥺

About this image
This moody cinematic nighttime scene captures a heartbroken young woman sitting alone on a wet sidewalk outside Riverdale High after a football game, discarded red roses scattered across the concrete at her feet. A boy in a varsity letterman jacket walks away from her as stadium floodlights glow over rows of vintage 1980s cars parked in the lot. The somber, nostalgic tone leans into retro 1980s high school aesthetic and quiet post-breakup sadness.

I thought that it was the 70s when they made the song a hit. ... let me go check... oh the Carpenters never released it as a radio single so it never charted. It was only on the album. I must have had the album then before (I lost a lot of albums in my few moves). Google said it was a hit for Skeeter Davis in 1963 reaching #2. I don't know who that was.
Thanks! I heard that Carpenter song way too many times in the 80s (yep...we were a little behind in that department back then), so now when I hear the words "end of the world," that's the first thing to pop up in my head.
It was part of their album "Now & Then"; I still have that cassette somewhere in the house. Come of think of it, that album was supposed to be a medley of oldies--so that song was already considered an oldy in the 1970s!
I didn't know who that was either. Wiki says that Skeeter Davis is remembered today mainly for two things: (1) that song; and (2) as an influence on Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton--we are talking prehistoric giant in pop history!
awww, they broke up. I voted for you. I thought it being the end of her personal world and not the whole world was a nice twist. But they were looking for something more apocalyptic
it's a fun song. I had that on a carpenter album with another song, interplanetary earth? it was a fun song
