QT: Money, @justrob Historians believe that around 8000 BC, several isolated prehistoric tribes briefly experimented with massive carved obsidian stones as a primitive form of currency. Each stone was painstakingly shaped by hand and represented stored labor and social status rather than practical spending value. The system was notoriously inconvenient — larger transactions required entire groups of people to physically transport the stones across villages and marketplaces. Some of the heaviest ‘high-value coins’ reportedly weighed hundreds of kilograms and featured a hole in the center so wooden poles could be inserted for carrying. Archaeologists later concluded that the concept was abandoned almost immediately for one obvious reason: carrying your savings to the market was basically a full-body workout. Thank you for reading this far. I obviously made all of that up — prehistoric humans hadn’t even invented money yet. They were probably still busy discovering that hitting rocks together was a great career path. 🤣
