SOE agent Yolande Elsa Maria Beekman (7 January 1911 – 13 September 1944), making notes of German troop movements in the city of Saint-Quentin, France, 1943. She was a heroine. Arrested in 1944, she was executed in Dachau that same year. More here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yolande_Beekman

A lot of people vote on their phones. And we vote on 2 at a time. So the image shows up for the phone voter at 1/2 phone size. I vote on a monitor so I see things pretty big. That means I like details. With a phone voter, this image is hard to see easily at 1/2 phone size. The details get lost. Most times the top 3 winners have a simpler composition -- 1 central main character that fits the criteria takes up most of the frame. Detailed images such as yours dont' tend to score as high as it's small for the phone voters.

I think the voting system is strange, sometimes you get several images multiple times and yes you cannot vote for every image handed in. But I am happy the other fairly realistic WWII image got second place.

Sealine and I both notice that there's a difference for USA night time votes and USA day time votes (don't know where other people are so naming my USA day/night time). Votes for us are definitely higher at night and points drop during the day. I think the daytime is phone users. I could be wrong tho. I'm just speculating
