58/70 **The Legend of the Hagoromo** A fisherman named Hakuryo is walking along the shore when he discovers a breathtaking robe made of shimmering feathers hanging from a pine tree. Recognizing it as a gift from the heavens, he decides to take it home. Before he can leave, a beautiful Tennin (a celestial spirit or maiden) appears and pleads for its return, explaining that without her hagoromo, she cannot fly back to her home in the sky. Hakuryo, moved by her distress but wanting to witness her beauty, makes a bargain: he will return the robe if she performs a celestial dance for him. The maiden agrees, but warns him that she needs the robe to dance. Although the fisherman initially fears she will fly away as soon as she has it, the maiden gently rebukes him, stating that deceit exists only among mortals—not in the heavens. Ashamed, Hakuryo returns the robe. As she dances, she gradually ascends, fading into the mist toward the moon.
