Wed: South Africa: Tokoloshe The legend of the Tokoloshe (or Tikoloshe) is one of South Africa's most famous and feared myths, deeply rooted in Zulu and Xhosa folklore. Often described as a small, grotesque, and hairy goblin-like creature, it is traditionally believed to be a malevolent spirit or "zombie" created by an evil sorcerer using a corpse. It is widely known for its ability to become invisible by swallowing a pebble or drinking water, allowing it to terrorize victims in their sleep. This widespread belief has even shaped domestic architecture in South Africa, where people traditionally raised their beds on bricks to keep them out of the creature's reach. The story typically involves the Tokoloshe being summoned by a jealous or vengeful person to cause misfortune, illness, or even death to a rival. Only a powerful sangoma (traditional healer) is believed to have the spiritual authority to banish the creature once it has targeted a household. While often associated with modern-day "gremlin" antics, the myth remains a serious cultural marker that reflects deep-seated societal anxieties about witchcraft, hidden malice, and the unseen consequences of jealousy. ---------------------------------------------------- Fairytale/Folklore Image/Video/Song Challenge (March 20-26, 2026) https://budgetpixel.com/blog/fairytalefolklore-imagevideosong-challenge-march-20-26-2026

Very cool Another one I have not heard about. It's interesting that folks raise their beds higher to make sure they are out of it's reach. It's like the boogieman under the bed in USA culture except boogiemen only snatch chlldren. It's interesting to me that people can go to someone to hex a family with the tokoloshe and that there are healers that can unhex them. Do the healer sangoma, also heal physical ailments? or are they only for metaphysical ailments? Or maybe the don't divide spiritual/metaphysical/physical ?
