**The MASH — "Suicide Is Painless" (1970/1980)** --- Inspired by the posting of the theme song for Friends. As I said, I came to Friends several years ago on Netflix. I took a look knowing how popular it had been. Didn't float my boat, thought it was quite juvenile, but suppose that it is the age group it was targeted at. Made me think of sitcoms I'd enjoyed, such as Big Bang Theory and Seinfeld. Neither of their theme songs were by One Hit Wonders. Then I remembered M.A.S.H. I loved the show back in high school when I saw it, and still enjoy re-runs if I see them today. It's theme song does fit the bill. --- Initially written for a single dark-comedy scene in the 1970 feature film, the vocal version by The MASH achieved an unprecedented second life when it was re-released in 1980, rocketing to #1 in the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands. The instrumental adaptation remained the sonic anchor for all 11 seasons of the television show, which culminated in the most-watched scripted television broadcast in global history. As a band, The MASH had no broader career; they ceased to exist the moment the session ended. While composer Johnny Mandel went on to string together an illustrious, five-time Grammy-winning career scoring films, the entity credited with the international vocal hit remains perfectly preserved in time as a single-track phenomenon.
