Norman Greenbaum — "Spirit in the Sky" (1969) --- "Spirit in the Sky" sold over two million copies by 1970. It climbed to #1 in the UK, Australia, Canada, and Germany, while peaking at #3 in the United States. Greenbaum, who is Jewish, was ironically inspired to write the Christian-themed gospel-rock anthem after watching country singer Porter Wagoner perform a religious song on television. The track's timeless appeal is cemented by its distinctively crunchy, distorted "fuzz-box" guitar riff. Prior to his solo career, Greenbaum had a minor novelty hit with the psychedelic jug band Dr. West’s Medicine Show and Junk Band ("The Eggplant That Ate Chicago"). After "Spirit in the Sky" exploded, Greenbaum released several follow-up singles and albums, but none of them managed to cross over into the mainstream charts. He eventually stepped away from the music industry entirely to become a dairy farmer, though the enduring use of his signature track in movies, commercials, and TV shows easily sustained him.
